The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the conviction of a Belgium man, sentenced by the lower court to life in connection with transporting more than one kilogram of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia’s Phnom Penh International Airport, in 2018.
Presiding Juge Nil Nonn named the convict as Tanguy Eddie J. Taller, 37, a Belgium freelance designer.
“The convict was sentenced on December 18, 2018, by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to a life sentence in prison and a fine of $20,000 for drug trafficking under Article 40 of Cambodia’s Law on Drugs Control.
“Tanguy appealed to the Phnom Penh Appeal Court, who upheld his conviction on April 6, 2020. He then appealed to the Supreme Court”.
“Tanguy was arrested on October 4, 2019, at the Cambodian-Vietnamese-Border, in Svay Rieng Province’s Bavet City, after he had crossed the border from Vietnam and checked in with the Cambodian Immigration Police office”.
Tanguy Eddie Taller arrives at the Phnom Penh Appeal Court in October 2021.
“The convict was arrested in accordance with the court’s arrest warrant and according to David Catry Noel’s confession,” he said.
According to court documents, police in the anti-drug department in the Ministry of Interior on January 10, 2018 arrested Noel, 34, after arriving at the Phnom Penh International Airport from Brazil with 1,003.24 grams of cocaine hidden in his suitcase.
At police interrogation, Noel claimed the drugs seized from him belonged to Taller.
He said Tanguy had hired him and given him $30,000 for transporting the drugs from Brazil to an unidentified Nigerian man living in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Taller denied Noel’s accusation, saying that he was unaware of Noel’s activities and was not involved in the crime.
Noel was sentenced on June 22, 2018, by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to a life sentence and fined 80 million riels ($2,000).
The municipal court also sentenced Tanguy in absentia to a life sentence and a fine of 80 million riels and the court issued his arrest warrant at that time.
