I had a ranger 2.5 diesel that used 60L from phnom penh to ratanakiri (about 750 km) give or take a few litres. When I switched to the tacoma it almost doubled. Went to a nissan navara v6 diesel to get rid of the tacoma and fuel economy is back on par with the ranger and the truck is a lot nicer too.
All of these are 4x4 but the tacoma was a 3.4 v6, but just to let you know they dont make 4 door 4 cyl tacomas. Even the v6 though was not very powerful especially for the fuel consumption and the 2wd 4 cylinder 2 door was even worse. Would not recommend, happy to be rid of our tacoma.
The only way you're going to get 4 doors and good fuel economy is with a diesel, so youre going to end up with either a navara, or ranger. Hilux 3.0 are still pigs on fuel sadly. Personally I liked the ranger more than the navara only because of looks and slightly better ground clearance, but both trucks have been good. Put 80,000 km on the ranger with no major issues but the navara only maybe 5k.
