Like button had not been ported to the new extension system; I have not checked recently. There were other extensions that served somewhat similar purposes which could be modified, but since the Like button received very little use previously, it was decided that the work involved was not warranted. Maybe this thread will convince Migs otherwise, although with only 30 people having even bothered to vote either way after 3 days, i don't see a huge amount of interest.

OK, I finally got over dengue to the point where I could look into this. I've made the changes needed, and the Like button is back. Thanks Alexandra, for finding the issue and for tracking down the phpbb SQL escape function, which saved me considerable time and effort.
