Smokers to be Fined for Lighting Up
(Phnom Penh): Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health and Permanent Vice-President of the Tobacco Products Control Committee, Dr Ung Phirun said that the Ministry of Health will soon begin fines for smokers in public and private areas, including restaurants and hotels.
Doctors met for World No Tobacco Day under the theme "Tobacco and Heart Disease" on May 24, 2018, at the Ministry of Health.
The minister said:
"The Ministry of Health cooperates with the Ministry of Justice, we have more than 500 working committees to work on the sub-decree, and if anyone who smuokess cigarettes in the prohibited area will be fined 20,000 riels," he said. Moreover, if the smoker in a hotel or restaurant is going to be twice as costly to a business owner, with fines 40,000 riel per smoker. "
Ashtrays in bars and restaurants are also to be banned.
