Few Chinese go to the beach, there in phuket for tours, shopping & eating
Oh forgot , they do their wedding photos on the beach as well
Never felt the 90 minutes in Bangkok was a pain, as it gives you time for a meal
as to the weekend , would depend on what time the flight is going on Friday/sat and back on Monday.
PS; they still have the early morning flight Phuket to SR (6:15 am)
SR-Phuket 8:30 am
True, they don't do the beach thing during the day (just sunset photos), but arrive to Chalong Pier around 8 in the morning and you'll see hundreds of them getting their life jackets on for boat trips out to those small islands.
The traffic in Phuket has just gotten insane though. I arrived one night at about 11 PM, and it still took almost 90 minutes to get to Kata Beach. In the past few years the military have also really cracked down on drunk driving, so there are a lot of nightly checkpoints between the different towns (and you can't bribe your way out of it with military police like with the local coppers).
A big downfall with going through Bangkok with Air Asia was that you need to buy a single ticket, which is more expensive than buying two single tickets, if you want to use their easy connection at the airport. If not, you will need to exit through immigration, and re-enter, which at DMK can be quite the challenge. Last time I actually went with Bangkok Airways, and had a much more pleasant trip, but it still took a lot of time. So these flights will be welcomed.
