Re: Teaching English
As an Australian, the OP is perfectly correct. Ilearnt that stuff at school, but during 25 years of teaching Secondary English there, it was never part of the curriculum. In the early 70s, formal grammar was abandoned in favour of a contextual approach to developing written and oral skills. Due to p...

Re: Mary Jane
I din't say dope was good for anything. I just pointed out it wasn't the exclusive prerogative of spaced out losers. Vangelis first came to notice as the keyboard maestro replacement for Rick Wakeman in Yes. If you read any biographies or interviews with the members, you might notice that Vangelis w...

Re: Mary Jane
People in important positions don't smoke? In the late 70s, I shared a joint with the Opposition Leader in Australia. He was later sacked in favour of another notorious dope smoker, but was given the consolation prize of Governor-General. Former Aussie Prime Minister John Gorton later became Patron ...

The Stones were playing Under My Thumb when the stabbing happened. The Angels mustn't have been listening to the lyrics or they would have carved up a groupie, rather than a black guy.

Re: New Bar In Sorya Mall
As I drove past on the way to work at 7.30am, the only bar open was packed to the rafters with the absolute elite of expat society. Made Walkabout seem like the Elephant Bar.

Re: Louis Armstrong
I have far more respect for Louis than Neil or Lance. My favourite story was when he met the Pope at the Vatican; stoned off the planet as usual. Highlight of the converstion was:
"Where's the crapper, Mr. Pope? I need to take a piss."

Re: Scott Mackenzie RIP
Superb adaptation of the original lyrics-loved it. Scott McKenzie was a no talent nobody, who had about as much hippy credibilty as Glenn Campbell, whom he closely resembled. The song was written by Papa John Phillips, of the Mamas and Papas. For some reason, he thought the song was unworthy of the ...

Re: Pol Pot t-shirt?
Been off the net for 2 weeks due to the incompetence of my ISP-Mekong Net-so I haven't had a chance to comment, as LL suggested. Up in Anlong Veng, the good old boys are getting older, but are certainly not recalcitrant. In my talks with them, they avoid discussing the 75-79 era, preferring to talk ...

Re: Caged PETA activists at KFC Norodom today
Pity they didn't do more research. They could have connected with Cambodia's heritage by using the cages found at Ta Mok's house in Anlong Veng, as shown on a previous thread. Bit cosier than the one they used. Some people might like them to receive the same treatment as Ta Mok's prisoners.

Re: Favorite Indian joint?
I asked the long term Indian expats at work for their favourite. Sher-e-Punjab, followed by Shiva Shakti and Flavours of India. They also told me that "mutton" is in fact goat. Real mutton isn't used in the dishes, here or in India.

Natures Garden on 63 St. sell excellent peri-peri sauce in very large plastic bottles for $5. The same range also includes high quality brown, barbecue and yoghurt/mint sauce for the same price. Judjing by the packaging, they are designed for the restaurant trade, not the supermarkets.

As I stated in an earlier thread, the Australian Embassy regularly evacuated Angeles based Aussies who had totally lost the plot. A combination of shabu (ice) and booze was invariably the cause.

Re: 'Bookish' Australians indifferent to Olympics success
Following the Australian Olympic failure, the PC crowd are calling for further cuts to government spending on elite and competitive sports. Give it all to the NGO created Community Olympics, I guess.
