Re: The money is in Vietnam apparently
In regards to classroom teaching, I've worked in Hanoi and Saigon for ACET, and I'm about to work in Cambodia for ACE. The pay is comparable. Maybe a couple of bucks less an hour but, all in all, not much in it. ACE is a great place to work, and does have admirable standards, but it can only ever b...
Re: Euro 2016
I spent a month in Germany at the World Cup in 2006 and we had a great time getting drunk with the locals and random people from all over the world, which will hopefully be the case for the fans in France. I was at the opening party in Frankfurt that year, which was certainly lots of fun! Sitting o...

Re: Why do Cambodians pay so much money for English lessons?
One of the biggest reasons why people pay for a native speaker to teach their kids is quite simple: outside of Europe, and particularly in countries like Cambodia, the level of non-native teachers in local schools just isn't high enough (in my experience most teachers tend to be around Pre-Int level...

Re: Serendipity Beach Cleared!
The rubbish left behind must have been awesome. The flash hotels are going to to expect to share their furniture and the beach with drunken, scruffy trash throwing Khmers on holidays and weekends. Takes me back to the time I saw a Khmer lad and his mates competing with each other on Occheutal to se...

Re: Classroom management - a good read
The issue of phones has cropped up quite a lot on this thread, and you obviously want them switched off for most of the class.
Why not embrace them from time to time though? They're a great resource for webquests/research projects and the use of technology is especially motivating for teenagers.

Re: Sources and Methods #20: Stephen Krashen
I found the Dogme approach very intriguing when I came across it and thought long and hard whether you'd be able to run a meaningful course in this way. Ultimately, I think it could be done but it would have to be with a very small group of learners and you'd have to be looking at very functional l...

Re: Sources and Methods #20: Stephen Krashen
As this thread has touched on the professionalism of teachers, it got me wondering about the Dogme method initially brought to attention by Scott Thornbury in 2000. It is a conversation-driven materials-light approach (rooted in CLT) which focuses on emergent classroom language, its analysis and re...

Re: Sources and Methods #20: Stephen Krashen
And I believe the PGCE was designed for the UK school system, not language institutes abroad... And that's pretty much the reason why language centres ask for CELTAs and not PGCEs. We're language teachers, so we need language teaching qualifications. Teaching English as a foreign language is not th...

Re: UK Passport Renewal - quickest way
I just did this and it took 9 days to have it sent by DHL to the UK and get a new one sent back. I know it's a quiet time of the year, but that's pretty good going. According to the online tracking they printed the passport the day after they received the app.

Re: Fantasy Premier League 2015/16 Season
I'd be surprised if Mourinho lasted the month at Chelsea. What sort of points totals do the likes of Hazard and Costa have compared to this time last year? The whole team looks shit every time I see them. Dead Man Walking. He's lost the plot. I really think the watershed was his shitting on Eva the...
