Re: 40k USD, 80 million Riel lost in house fire
I would bet that if someone made them a nice offer to take that money off their hands and deal with it...they might accept it. Might be a lot easier than for them trying to get a visa.

Re: South African marrying a Cambodian
Miguelito, I don't know where you are from, but in the U.S. we only have one piece of paper that documents that you are legally married and that is a marriage license. I am not sure if the documentation that PSD Kiwi is referring to is for people who have married outside the Kingdom, or those seekin...

Re: South African marrying a Cambodian
My wife and I got your marriage license within the last year. I don't know if there have been changes, but if you have a marriage certificate from abroad...it would certainly be worth a shot. Compared to all of the hoops you have to jump through to do it in the Kingdom....this was a breeze.

Re: South African marrying a Cambodian
Once you have wed in RSA, it is relatively easy to obtain a Cambodian marriage license. You just go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, present your marriage license and fill out some paperwork. Then, go have the local Sangkat sign off...and you can receive your marriage license. This back door appr...

Re: Expat 'characters'
I was a regular in Paul Guymon's bar before he was a regular in mine. He was a wonderfully lapsed Mormon..who was a truly unique character. Saturday late mornings with Paul at the Walkabout are great memories. In no particular order: Fuck off Paul of Checkers and later Tiger's Feet. Hurley Snow Mitk...

Re: arranging contacts in Cambodian society
Ring them up. Years ago I did some market research work in Phnom Penh, and I was able to arrange meetings with the biggest players in town in business, media, NGO's, etc.....just by phoning and asking for a meeting. Phnom Penh is still a small town and it is remarkable who will grant you a meeting i...

Re: Furniture in Phnom Penh
There is a sofa shop there on Sothearos, opposite Aeon and a bit south. I have had a few sofas made there and you can get a large, very comfortable sectional made for around 500.00.........and they can make a smaller love seat for a bit less.

Re: Living in Cambodia/Abroad permanently
I know people who arrived in Cambodia with nothing and built fortunes. But, for every one I know who did that....I can probably count 20 who either lost fortunes, or who got trapped in a menial existence because their skills to make money back home eroded. If you have a specialized trade, skill, or ...

Re: Living in Cambodia/Abroad permanently
It is generally difficult to earn much money in Cambodia. My best advice would be to have a back up plan to return home if needed....before your skills atrophy to the point that you would have to start a new career from scratch. Living in Cambodia is becoming increasingly expensive....and unless you...

Re: Don't pay the ferryman!
I have always negotiated with a long list of amenities that must be added...paint, air cons, etc....and a demand that the rent be discounted, but like Ricecakes....I offer to pay for six or twelve months up front. This gives the landlord the capital to make the repairs and is usually very effective.
