Thanks everyone for the input.
This is kind of what I am wondering about. Its like I am a bit timid to enter that scene (I do not know how to handle it much with little experience) but on the other hand, I love to watch people and the goings on, as I have in Bangkok at Nana and Cowboys. The overly aggressive females (and 'other') is a bit much yet the attention is kind of exciting too. I walked through Siem Reap night market a while back alone (I am almost never alone) and I had a bro actually ask me if I needed a hand and dragged me away from them. Im a bit afraid to be solo and even drink as who knows what might happen with a bit of impaired judgement.kinard wrote:Pattaya is too much of a freak show for the likes of me, but over the hill is Jomtien Beach and not so in your face as Pattaya, imo.
.What is the 'dark side?'Phuket2006 wrote:go; its great fun; some fantastic deals on hotels, great seafood, Dont need spend much money, as the show is on the streets. Pop into a few bars (love the show at "Angelwitch") head out to Jomtien in the daytime and swim. Take a brief trip over to the "darkside" Its not as bad, sexy or depraved as everyone likes to think it is.
Can I rent your room and moto, lol.LaudJohn wrote:I go there a lot, especially when commuting between Cambodia and Australia. I keep a room there and a moto.
Well, I'm not gonna lie, that does sound interesting. Likely not really what I should be doing trying to get my head together for what lies ahead, but ...LaudJohn wrote: can sit and watch naked female mammal flesh gyrating in front of you with a $2 cold beer if you want

Will be departing after some days in Siem Reap, thought to take the day bus to BKK, and then on to Pattaya, maybe spread my time (4-5 days) between them.
Whats the best route/way to go there, and, if departing from SR, can you just go there directly? How long does it take to travel to and from Bangkok-Pattaya, and what is the best way to do it?
I don't know when I will be in Asia again for the distant future and I guess it is something I do want to experience so I likely will do it.
Any recommendations on places to stay?

From BKK to Pattaya there are buses every half hour from Mo Chit or Ekamai (this is often the easiest to get to via the BTS) bus stations for about 108 bht. Takes around 3 hours. The buses drop you at the bus terminal on Pattaya Nua (North) road. Then hop on a bhat bus for about 30 bhat to take you to your destination, or a motodop taxi which costs more but is faster.
A good central place to stay is Sawasadee Siam on Soi Bhakaow ont he corner of Soi Honey. Right in the heart of the action and very reasonably priced right now with a pool. Just down the road (less than 100m) from soi LK Metro with 2nd rate gogo bars but cheap beer. Lots of beer bars, some BJ bars and Massage parlours in the area and quite a few Ladyboys if you are interested. This area is less touristy and cheaper than Walking Street area.
Getting around, Bhat buses cost 10 bhat a ride.
As for the Dark side, it is East Pattaya, that is the area on the opposite side of Shumkvit road. You need your own transport to explore this area and I would not recommend it without a guide as you will probably get lost.
IMHO Pattaya is way more fun than BKK and well cheaper.
I will probably be there on Tuesday night, for some golf on my way back from watching the Rugby in Sydney and time in Melbourne, until I have to fly to PP for the Lonestar Fantasy football draft on Sunday.

Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
Shared taxi to Poipet. They leave from up on the river. Upstream, on the right side, 200 meters over Rd 6. Whole back seat for 10 bucks. On the Thai side, hop on a mini bus straight to Pattaya. Quick and cheap. Don't bother booking with any of the coach companies- wasted journey time. Just sit next to the girl with the biggest pair of falsies- on her way to work, and all done and dusted without paying any bar fines.

Can you please elaborate? Not totally clear about the location, but know Rd 6 and the River. You can just go to a place and grab a taxi to Poipet without previous arrangement? What time? And after you cross into Thailand, where do you find the buses to Pattaya and how much usually?DF wrote:Shared taxi to Poipet. They leave from up on the river. I'd say you are picking the perfect time to visit Machevilli, I live in Jomtien and drove around Pattaya centre doing various things this morning and road and foot traffic wise it is pleasantly quiet by normal standards. You'll be in the heart of the action where Laud John recommends, but get out from there in the daytime to see more. If you want a quiet beach day I'd strongly recommend hopping on a baht Bus from South Pattaya to Jomtien, 10 baht and will take about 10 minutes. It's a nice beach and is really quiet and peaceful just now. Similarly take a 10 baht ride from North Pattaya to the end of Naklua road where there is a nice fish market, choose your food and they will cook it and there is a nice park around there to sit and eat it. That area is very much old Pattaya and has a pleasant traditional feel about it.
I think if you take the time to see each of those 3 distinct areas you'll have a much better idea of the place than most. A ride on the baht Bus alone will show you the variety of places on offer. For a hassle free afternoon beer on beach road with a front row view of the sideshow you can't beat Lovely Corner bar at the corner of Soi 8 and Beach Road, great service, cold beer and prime viewing.

Now, LaudJohn, the guy is a bit nervous about even entering Pattaya and you recommend Siam Sawasdee? It opened in the 90's but has since gone downhill and is now a dump for Indians and Pakistani. They also advertise on banners monthly rates which is a sure sign of a low-life hotel. Correct me if I'm wrong since last time I went was last year.LaudJohn wrote:From BKK to Pattaya there are buses every half hour from Mo Chit or Ekamai (this is often the easiest to get to via the BTS) bus stations for about 108 bht. Or book at Sutus Court 1 a bit more south on Soi Bua Khao. Sutus 1 is a nice hotel with a more family clientele but You can bring a girl in. Tip in Pattaya - book doubles, then they shouldn't charge extra for company. Always book on Booking.com and check reviews if hotel is guest friendly. You can also try Adelphi on Bua Khao a bit north which has a SPA opposite. BlueSky on Soi 5 is a bit off but nice hotel and close to the cabarets and the Tiffany shooting range. KTK Suites is nice but very off but good value for money. And of course You have the LK's - Metropole, Reneaissance, Suites and Wing, all not new by now but decent hotel if You get a good price on Booking.
Soi Bua Khao is all You need for a soft core sex holiday. Soi LK Metro has nice bars and some OK go-go:s, for more of the stuff hit Soi 8. Sailor Bar on Soi 8 is a staple. The Go-go:s on Walking street are hit or miss, try a beer in several until You find Your favourite. And never hook up with a girl in a go-go, they's over the top expensive. For wilder shows, the Windmill had reportedly closed down but I heard Annabelle is a solid replacement. Be prepared for something out of a Fassbinder movie. Oh, and before entering any indoor aircon place, check that they advertise the prices on dricks and not the happy hour prices, otherwise it can be expensive. If a dancer asks for a tip then THB100 is plenty enough. Someone mentioned the freelancers on Beach Rd late in the night but I recommend You avoid that for a first visit.
Eating: corner of Bua Khao and Diana Inn has good kebab stands, 60THB or so. Also Curries for 100. Otherwise the BigC on Central Rd has an excellent food court on ground floor (You buy coupons to pay with) and upstairs BigC has ready made food that is usually marked down after 8pm. The BigC up north if it's reopened now has a great selection of restaurants, quite good value. After dark there are noodle carts that serve chicken noodle soup for 30-40 baht. The dark blobs in the soup is boiled chicken blood, good for Your health.
Like LaudJohn says, bus from Mor Chit or Ekamai is quick and convenient. If You take a shared pickup check the price. If You tell a pickup Your destination he will drive in taxi mode and ask You like THB300 for any destination, just hop on and hop off and pay THB10.

Loads of private cars leaving for the border as soon as they are full. Price for a whole car is 30 bucks, max. Grab a tuk and just say you need the place with cars and vans to Poipet.Machiavelli wrote:Can you please elaborate? Not totally clear about the location, but know Rd 6 and the River. Cross the border on foot. Once through, continue up the only road for 150 meters. You will see the mini buses on your left filling up for various destinations. Price will be around 250 Baht max.

Thanks everyone for the advice so far; for the uninitiated, its a lot to take in and I will need to work through it.
If I booked on Booking.com what area should I search and what is an average price for something ok decent?
Thanks.

I've never been there. I'm sure it has some great stuff going on but it sounds kind of crass, like Vegas or something.
