Some hope for dogs?
I've noticed recently there's been a shift in how dogs are perceived. A growing number of people are against the dog meat trade in Asia including Bali's governor who recently called for an end to the dog meat trade after an Australian news outlet exposed the cruelty involved - not to mention vendors being busted for passing dog meat off as beef satay. China has also banned an infamous dog meat festival which slaughtered thousands of dogs, stolen and strays, over a ten day period. Taiwan has banned the sale and consumption of cat and dog meat with Thailand now even having animal welfare and rescue groups established which would have been unlikely not too long ago.
One the greatest difficulties I have when living in Asia is the manner in which many animals are treated, so it pleases me when people like the two dog thieves below get their comeuppance.

No sympathy for dog thieves whatsoever, I had my pooch stolen off my porch in Ha Noi some years back.
P.S.: whilst China tried to ban the dog meat festival, it still went ahead: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-40337327

I understand that there's a problem with thefts of dogs that are personal property as pets, but should that mean a ban on the consumption of meats?
As Pedros mentioned in his stories on raising fowl here, there is a large theft problem with chickens. Should we ban the consumption of poultry?

No because chickens are not usually pets and no one really cares about them as much as cuddly waggy tailed dogs or cute cats, what show their happenyness when a human is around.
Same with rats. Eat them all you like. Gut them in the street. Whatever.

Yeah, because you give dogs food.YaTingPom wrote:No because chickens are not usually pets and no one really cares about them as much as cuddly waggy tailed dogs or cute cats, what show their happenyness when a human is around.

Don't give them food and they'll rip your children's faces off. Even the small cuddly ones. (Dogs, not children.)

Yeah, cats are so fucking superior. At least with a dog i can throw him one of my flip flops on the beach and the little fucker never gets bored. Keeps running back with it he does. He loves it! Now try that with a cat. Dogs. Man's best friend. Yeah, pick that shit up for us friend.
At least cats do it in the neighbours garden.
I'd eat dog. It's just meat.
I'd like to know if anyone in Cambodia would still eat meat if they saw the conditions it was kept in and how it's slaughtered?
Are people up in arms about how the dogs are kept and slaughtered or the fact they're dogs? The media like to roll out the old stolen pet line every year.
Dogs can't be that hard to farm. It's not like they run away when you try and herd them like cows. "Come on boy. Time to get slaughtered"

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.”
Hey a question - What is the average time period for SE Asian's to get bored with cute fluffy dogs? Have these dogs generally had a run anywhere or do they mostly get around in the front baskets of motorbikes?
There's a young khmer dude (nice enough) downstairs who does a night shift and owns a cute fluffy dog. Had it for a few months. He feeds it take away beef and good cuts of meat cooked in restaurants, but that seems a contradiction to the fact the dog is tied up all day, all night on a short leash. Never seen him take the dog out for a crap or pee so i do it now as he's busting to go in the morning.
Is it just an English obsession about taking the dog out for a crap and exercise in the morning and night? Am i a precious snow flake, or do khmer's think it beneath them to take a dog outside for a crap?

A better question may be what is the average lifespan of one of those dogs, which is probably extremely inbred and separated from its mother far too early.spitthedog wrote: Hey a question - What is the average time period for SE Asian's to get bored with cute fluffy dogs?
