Persecution of Christians!
Persecution of Christians!
Today some missionary in my hometown (in the Midwestern US) was at the local super-church "witnessing" on the subject of religious persecution. The person I talked to said the man had just come back from SE Asia and was telling the congregation about how more Christians are killed in Cambodia than anywhere else.
I said it was just fundie paranoia. Then he tells me that government spooks fly over the revivals in helicopters and dust Khmer born-agains with deadly poison. Naturally the details were a little hazy--they didn't know when or where exactly this was supposed to have happened.
Anyone know where these stories are coming from? And if you're wondering what you can do, you apparently can click on the ads at the top of the screen and chip in.

Sure I remember reading something about these guys being forced back into Viet Nam from Cambodia. Maybe they're getting serious now!
Some basic info about it on:

Well, ever since 1979 the Cambodian Govt. has been pretty much in the pocket of the Vietnamese. Although Cambodian's constitution offers religious freedom to all I think they are still very wary of upsetting the Vietnamese. I don't know what the situation is like for religious minorities in Vietnam but I would imagine that it isn't easy. Interestingly, The Cambodia Daily does deserve credit on the recent Montagnard cases in Mondulkiri and Ratnakari, they were pretty instrumental, insofar as I know, in getting the issue out in the open.
The fact that some of the Montagnard's don't fancy living in the US makes me wonder. Perhaps they feel that they would prefer persecution from their government rather than living in a country run by a buffoon.

When I read the subject of this thread, I was hoping it was a point by point guide on how to join in on persecuting Christians in this country... Im disappointed, obviously to find no such news...
Now THATS something I would donate my time towards.
I despise how these effen christians (they dont even deserve capitalisation of their adjective) come to a country with a perfectly fine religious system, and deem it necessary to pollute it with their bullshit belief system. They put themselves in the political parties bag of rice for your votes scheme, by obligating poor Khmers to follow their religion, or at least give it lip service, in exchange for their gifts of needed goods.
It angers me so much. Grrrrrrr.... I've never seen a buddhist start a war.. they dont have a godhead, and they dont preach to the ppl who dont want to know... Buddhism is all good to me.. so I wish the christians would just leave it alone!

Why bag Christians ??, as opposed to some other form of religion ?
If you hate one form of religion, why not hate them all ??
Or is it simply that comming from a white Anglo background, you choose to hate the one you are most farmiluar with, but dare I say, have the least amount of knowledge about.
I too cannot stand the fanatics of christianity or any other religion, but I don't let it cloud my perception, on the other hand there are some interesting points in many forms of religion, but each one has it's zealots, and when a person blinded by there faith attempts to influence you, walk away.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Dr Suess
While there are many things I appreciate about Buddhism,I think you are looking at the world through rose-tinted glasses here.Ever heard of the Samurai? There have been numerous wars started by Buddhists, think of all the wars between Burma,Siam,Cambodia ,the war in Sri Lanka etc.The Tibetans were once famous as a warrior race, and what about the Thai`s with their "peaceful" responses to demonstrations in 1976,1992,and this year?Grrrrrrr.... I've never seen a buddhist start a war..
I agree with everyone’s comments here but I think the original point that Wade and Doctor Seuss are trying to make is that Cambodia has an established religion and the Christians have no right to invade…….
I think the US for example would feel the same if suddenly Buddhists went abroad and offered “bribes” in return for a change in religious beliefs.
What if a group of Monks opened an orphanage in the US or UK or even my home country of Australia; and raised the children based solely on Buddhist beliefs…….. we all know that this would no be accepted.
Why is it so widely practiced in Cambodia????
X.

Ectatsic worded it well...
As for knowing little about Christianity.. thats not true atall.. Ive been well reared on it. Well enough to know its full of contradictions and BS.
And, Im not just subverse to Christianity... I dont agree with any religion that has a godhead as the Number 1 and all must bow to he.
Christians I think are the most shitful though because of the way they recruit and force their shitty religion upon others...

Dr "S",
You seem to have avery narrow point of view, Christianity is not the only religion which has converted people by force. There are 3 major forms of Islam, all of which are willing to use force to convert, hindu also are more that willing to use force, the Budists also use force and social pressure to convert, .The list goes on and on.
Putting force aside for a moment, it does open the question as to why mankind feels the need to believe in God, apart from the communist states where religion was outlawed, can you name any culture that does not believe in a god figure.
I'm sure he exists, but not in the way many people chose to percieve him, I'd also argue that all the various religions are looking at the same guy, and that the differences in the various religions have come about from individual interperations rather than there being more than one god.
I'll restate a previous comment, zealots and fernatics are dangerous individuals, and should be avoided. They take a single point out of the bible, koran what ever book they read to support there position, but if they bothered to read the entire chapter that would be forced to adopt a different position.
Religion is a bit like NGO'S, you only comment on the bad apples in the crop, coz all the good people go about there business without attracting attention

Actually I thought I did name one religion that doesnt have a godhead. Buddhism has no doctrine that claims of one god. They have this guy called buddha who they say found ONE way to find the source of what really is. They do not promote this guy as the creator, or the main man, or as god, but simply as an example to follow. Even then they say there are other paths, and he was just one example. It is the only religion I KNOW of that has set practices that enable someone to attain, at the least, temporary states of enlightment, allowing whatever you decide to believe in to be based on experience..not the blind faith of following a fiction story that may or may not be true.
Yeah, youre right, religions generally all have their faults, but my personal belief is that the one in this country is the lesser of all evils.
I object to the way that the Khmers are being bought off due to their poverty by a bunch of wankers that need to convert others to their belief system, simply to validate it to themselves.
Khmer culture dictates that when someone has done something like provided your family with rice, then refusing an invitation to that persons meeting (Christian story telling sessions) would be outright rude. The black badge wearing fools take advantage of this.
BUT, I do admit, on the other hand.. the Khmers may be having the last laugh here. They may just be taking the handouts, and paying the rest lipservice. Saying God is great, but still praying to buddha every night. If thats the case..good for them...
I know of a few cases where men have said they follow god and blah blah blah, simply to be employed by Christian NGO's that make their faith a prerequisite to employment. Theyve got well paid jobs and worked themselves out of poverty.. even though they dont understand a word of what they are agreeing too.
Anyway.. ho hum... this is always going to spark vicious debate.. religion, politics, and the fact that I am more inteliigent/funny/handsome than anyone else in the world are 3 topics that always provoke a never ending debate... People are always going to agree to disagree... but as long as we're not killing each other over it, I guess its ok...
