A few years ago (New Year 2003-04) when I was in India my bag was stolen at a train station, leaving me absolutely literally with only my shirt, trousers and sandals. A Hindu sadhu (holy man) took me under his wing since he could travel by train for free (turned out to be a bona fide sex guru, but that's another story) and got me across country to Calcutta.
There was a British Consulate which until about a week before I arrived had had fully embassy responsibilities but had just been downgraded. They were fuck all help to me and I had to spend the next three weeks living off the kindness of the street beggars and hand-pulled rickshaw drivers. Great (if somewhat deadly) experience, mind.
mad barang on riverside tonight

Ive been down so very damned long that it looks like up to me-who sung that.
Talking of down, just came back from prey saw on a visit to francois.
The jail is always sad because one sees the families crying for dad.
There were a couple of nice wives or girlfriends visiting today, hugging their men.
I always wonder how many inmates there have been banged up for nothing.
I asked francois what he wanted-freedom he said.
Have since spoken with his lawyer who says he may be able to reduce the five years normally imposed for robbery.
i have seen a khmer get five years for stealing a bicycle-tough but fair.

deleted first comment because i can't be arsed communicating in any way (meaning constructively or destructively) with people who already have too many opinions.

Is the book any good? He's another one that died way too young. Apparently Been Down... was made into a movie and released the same year that LA Woman came out. Looking at IMDB, it only has 27 votes averaging 5/10 stars, so it couldn't have had too wide of distribution and those that did see it didn't seem to like it much.jm wrote:I always think first of Richard Farina's book of the same title which is said to have inspired the Doors' song. Farina was married to Joan Baez' (hot) sister Mimi and died in a moto crash a couple days after the book came out.
