If you have never experienced it I would say it is definitely worth doing at least once. I had a great time, and I HATE crowds at all. I realized if you are six inches taller than most of the people around, you can kind of just cruise right through. The "electric" buzz in the air is quite palpable

very good point about being taller than the crowd. I really don't like crowds either. However, when you rise above them physically, it doesn't feel like a crowd. And I agree with the electric buzz. Man, how can you be in Cambo and not experience this at least once? The boat race is a huge part of their tradition. Experience Cambodian tradition at it's largest.Nate wrote:If you have never experienced it I would say it is definitely worth doing at least once, and I HATE crowds at all. Sounds like these places will be hard to get to. I don't deal with massive crowds very well.Doctor Seuss wrote:Shizz is spot on here.shizzle wrote:There's often a special 'foreigner's only' section which allows you to have a seat in the shade to enjoy an unobstructed view of the boat races without having to deal with the riffraff.
The foreigners section is adjoining to the section reserved for the King (its near the little pagoda in front of the palace). You can almost spit on the King (not that there is anything wrong with that).
The foreigners section is kind of like heaven-on-earth for the Water Festival. Its got the next best view after the King, its comfortable, and there are drinks on tap at all times.
Oh, another good spot if you get in early is the top floor of FCC. All the tables will be booked out, but there's always standing room to stand around, have a drink, and gives a great vantage point to see the boats and, at night time, the fireworks.

you can also try Touk (if that's still it's name), on the corner across the road from FCC. Also, Chow has a rooftop terrace. You can usually get into them and see things. It isn't so bad.Dengchao wrote:Sounds like these places will be hard to get to. Well, you will keep feeding him cheeseburgers.taxiboy wrote:ohh and im expecting my cat to go missing within the next few days!
I did notice today that their were huge throngs on opposite bank but PP side was a bit sparse so far. I think its just practice today in prep of main event sat, sun & mon but maybe this year they've changed the gameplan to keep the madding crowd away from their recently beautifully manicured landscaping. I also noted that the security guards were pissing off the vendors who even contemplated setting up their plastic chairs.

even last year they were keeping them away from the riverfront area... i imagine you may be right re the landscaping this year... it's great to sit over a drink or three and watch them all arriving over the next few days.Pst'n Broke wrote:Well, you will keep feeding him cheeseburgers.taxiboy wrote:ohh and im expecting my cat to go missing within the next few days!

when i lived in PP i lived on the river ( the opposite side of Phnom Penh).
Got some great shots and loved it.
Only went over to pp once in the 4 days
Go over to that side and see how the crews celebrate and enjoy. also great views from Snows place
