Here here- I accept the free speech arguments and I'd say that black humour has a place, but that time and place isn't so soon and in a public forum which can be read by friends and family.scotland wrote:No, I'm only asking for a little compassion and respect for Ryan and his family by toning down the jokes and commentscambod wrote:[Sorry for ur loss, but I assume u are trying to make this thread even easier for his family and friends to find by typing his full name, age and nationality in it?
Thank you, while I agree with free speech, I just feel some of the comments made were in bad taste but thank you for editing them

stains is best ignored. Often the posts are provocative and designed to get a response. It's just attention seeking.

I suspect the qualified lifeguard on duty was on a bathroom break at the time of the incident. Seriously though, 100 yards away you have another water feature - the sea. Isn't the pool like the big attraction for Utopia, apart from the drugs and the $2 beds. Closing it off in the evenings isn't practical.badboybubby wrote:ditch the pool or close it off in the evenings when they start to gear up for the drinking...

how impractical can it be?....it may be an attraction but in the evenings all that people are doing is drinking...to me it's a bit of OHS...sure there's the beach but that's not the concern of the people running utopia...angsta wrote:I suspect the qualified lifeguard on duty was on a bathroom break at the time of the incident. I met the owners of Utopia on the morning of the day it opened. The venue was the Happi Hippi. They immediately sized me up as a potential customer-any acquaintance of the Hippi met the target market requirements. I was invited to the opening party, but for some reason didn't make it. After observing from a distance their subsequent history, I guess it was survival instincts that made me decline the invitation.

Daily Record are finally on the case:
A SCOTS backpacker has died after jumping into a swimming pool at a nightclub in Cambodia. Ryan Dillon, 33, went missing after returning to the pool to look for his glasses, which he had mislaid. Minutes later, he was found lying face down on the bottom of the pool. A security guard and a tourist pulled his body from the water, and a nurse tried to resuscitate him but failed. Friends said last night that Ryan, from Glasgow, had been drinking heavily before tragedy struck at 1.30am on Sunday at the Utopia nightclub in the resort of Sihanoukville. An ambulance took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was then taken back to the nightclub for a police investigation to be carried out. Medical examiner Dr Se Sorith said Ryan, who arrived in Sihanoukville a few hours before he died, appeared to have drowned.
His travelling companions, Ronnie Green, 31, from London, Jack Watts, 22, from Coventry, and Peter Jarrett, 31, from Australia, said they were devastated by his death. Ronnie - who'd been travelling with Ryan for two months through Thailand, Laos, and then Cambodia - said: "He was always the life and soul of his party, and very much into his travelling. "He loved everyone, he was always extremely happy and loved life."
Mark Palmer, 40, the part-owner of Utopia, arranged a Buddhist ceremony at the nightclub yesterday for Ryan's friends to pay their respects. Buddhist monks from Wat Krom temple in Sihanoukville, poured water on the crowd to mark the passing of his soul. Mark said: "Ryan was full of energy and definitely a great guy with lots of friends." He added he plans to build a lifeguard stand to prevent similar tragedies. Ryan's family have arranged for his body to be driven to Phnom Penh and then flown back to Britain.

I have probably mis spent more time in utopia than most here.I never knew that it was owned by kiwis.
The pool was actually more dangerous when it was empty for a long period.
I remember one night about a year ago when the US fleet was in town and many of them went berserk in the pool, doing bombies and stuff.
I was just waiting for someone to bang their head on the side of the pool.....

a life guard tower, that he'll have someone sitting in 24hrs??? Is that the best he can do? We all know "guards" fall asleep frequently in Cambodia while on duty, so a fat lot of good THAT's going to do when the next person goes to retrieve some specs at one in the morning while drunk!
