Should Western embassy personnel hang out in hostess bars?
Voted 'No', but only because of the US policy on reducing trafficking. I'm not equipped to make any moral argument, but if those are the terms of their employment then they should probably stick to them, since it's taxpayers money n everything.
So that would have made Christmas day the 26th of December just gone? Or is it the 27th since the 26th is already a holiday? Shall we move the king's birthday by a day or two as well?Since they go to the trouble to actually publish the holidays, it might make sense to publish the actual day people get off,
I don't know any country that posts the actual days off in their holiday gazette.
It's always the days of whichever event and then there are the T& Os.

In case you haven't noticed-Christmas doesn't really figure into things here, but otherwise you seem to be getting the picture. If something relevant, for example the King's birthday, fall's on a Saturday or Sunday, then the following Monday will be a holiday. If it's Easter Bunny Day, or Halloween or Xmas or whatever, you can forget about any privileges.OnCore wrote:So that would have made Christmas day the 26th of December just gone? Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Not really. I have seen calendars of holidays that list the date of the event and then a date it is celebrated that year. I've seen this in the US and in Venezuela both. So Christmas would be noted on the 25th with the notation of which are the official days off. The reason is, as Lord Playboy notes, not everyone works Saturdays and some work Sundays. By establishing which is the legal holiday, it clarifies things. You know that if the date of the event is Saturday, but you don't work Saturday, and the government says it is celebrated on Monday you still get a day off. Nice to not leave it to the discretion of an employer.
Not that clarity is a particularly significant virtue. A little chaos is good for the soul. So hell with it.
It's a pretty simple rule, me thinks.BubbaRamDas wrote:SunSan wrote:I don't know any country that posts the actual days off in their holiday gazette.

It's not like most businesses follow these rules anyways, so hardly matters what it says either way....

I like the last part of your post, Cambod... the part that says it hardly matters.
I voted that embassy personnel should be allowed to hang at hostess bars because the reasoning that they shouldn't is just too grey - at least as it applies to US embassy personnel.
Prostitution is not illegal in the US. That decision is left up to the states. It is legal in some parts of Nevada, possibly other places too. I believe the brothels in Nevada can legally make a profit from selling sex, while here in Cambodia (if I understand correctly), making money off someone else selling sex is not legal. Or something like that.
I wonder if in those places in Nevada where brothels are legal, is it legal for two people on their own to agree on a sex for money exchange? Do they HAVE to go through some kind of licensed brothel in order for it to be legal?
Regarding the issue of the state department document arguing that paying for sex increases trafficking, I would argue that Cambodian hostess bars frequented by westerners influence trafficking less than Nevada brothels because of the reduced profit incentive for the western hostess bar owners.
Obviously hostess bar owners (might) make a profit, but I think we're all aware of the lines that are too risky to cross for those bar owners who want to stay out of jail.
Which Nevada brothels are best? Easy answer for any 440 reader, as we all know the best hostess bar is the one that sells the cheapest beer. I'm sure that logic would work just as well in Nevada as it does here. Some of you might argue that quality of pool tables or urinals should be the deciding factor, but that's just crazy talk.

I hardly think one can expect the citizens to be fine upstanding examples of society when their government has declared wars for money.Whoring is nothing compared to mass murder plus theft.

What the embassy workers do in their private time should be their own business as long as it is not illegal.

It used to state in a long-standing article on the old 440 homepage that prostitution was legal.
Always wondered about that, as SR got outed for extra-marital affairs and a law was passed as well regarding adultery.
Then again, any law is only as valid as its enforcement.
Had to laugh at this, from Wikipedia:
'UNTAC did little to stem the growth of prostitution in the country, which was long lasting.'
