Bloody women!
No, this isn’t another shitty bargirl thread, although, I’m sure after 4-5 posts it will descend into one. I’m talking about western women, in particular their inability to stay in Cambodia.
“If you’re a person who has options, or money, or anything at all anywhere else, I have no idea why you’d choose to be here. This is an extension of hell.” Those were the words of a recently departed American.
I associate with two completely different groups of people here in PP, three if you include the louts at Garage.
Group 1 were the people I met on my second night here in Phnom Penh. They were former students of the French school made up predominately of French/Khmer who went to university in France. For the most part they were here for the summer holidays to see their parents.
Group 2 has been made up of 20-something year olds who went through Language Corps. It is in this group which I have been witness to the merry-go-round of women, coming off the planes, finishing their “training”, landing decent jobs, then slowly but surely breaking down and pining to GTFO. The record for shortest stay has been 2 weeks. I’ve heard the “You’re not as pretty as the local girls” theory which I can understand to an extent, however, some of these girls have landed boyfriends here and have still had the same resentment towards not just the country but the people who inhabit it.
One friend, who has shortened her stay from 1 year to 3 months, after consuming 6 shots of tequila and becoming violently ill stated “…I want to find one of them (Khmers) so I can puke on them”.
Pretty much beside the women from Group 1 who grew up here, I know of only a handful who have survived here for longer than a year, Giblet and Pajama among them. The common trend for longevity seems to be having a career here and/or marrying a local man.
I cannot possibly understand this phenomenon. I love Cambodia, and the thought of leaving pisses me off each and every time I am faced with doing so. The rigid western world is MY extension of hell.

On the plus side, there are fucking thousands of them here now.

Adapting to a new country is difficult. Of course, that does not fully explain the situation.
When I first arrived in India I told my family about the rat I saw in the airport, the ants and cockroaches in my room and the child beggars. That was enough to convince my mother and sisters that they would never visit me in India. Many (but not all) women enjoy making their environments pretty and comfortable. For many, this is an important aspect to leading a good life. I know few women who can tolerate living in a raw or ugly environment: seeing ants in your flat or a homeless child is just too much for some. Let's face it, would there really be a wallpaper, candle, or flower industry if their were no women? My flat is ugly, but I could give a damn. My sisters would find it painful. They would drop a few grand just for the sake of aesthetics. True, not all women are like this. But, I think it could be a factor. I hope that was not too sexist.

That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart.

Sometimes I feel the same. Usually once a day. Sometimes again in the evening. Possibly every time I leave my apartment.
But it's Cambodia! I love it.

I think that has plays a major role. American women I've found to be particulary unforgiving of the locals lazyness aswell. One told me that she was too used to things being done efficiantly like back at home and couldn't appreciate the apathy of the locals.connecticuter wrote:Many (but not all) women enjoy making their environments pretty and comfortable. He's been in his room 35 years...time to let him out!
Who hasn't puked on a Cambodian, or 2....
I'm just glad the girls that hate it here leave so quickly. The ones that stay even after they are bitter about the place are the ones that really annoy me. That goes for gents here too that are here years after they decided this was a shit-hole. U know, the ones u say "hey" to randomly at a bar or restaurant, and then the next thing u know they are on an extra-loud rant about how stupid the Khmers are, or how lazy the men/women are, and meanwhile u're doing EVERYTHING u can to get away from this nutter and try to make it obvious u don't even know him...

We must hang around in different crowds. Most of the Western women I know here have been having a ball, even the ones flitting from contracts/part time work to unemployment and back again.tuk-tukfish wrote:Pretty much beside the women from Group 1 who grew up here, I know of only a handful who have survived here for longer than a year, Giblet and Pajama among them. Man, just give a motodop 20$ and let her puke on him. She'll feel better. Puking on people in the western world isn't so easy, she might find one thing she likes about Cambodia.

Just to clarify so as to not let tuk-tukfish besmirch our good names, neither Pajama nor I have careers to speak of, nor any hope or intention of marrying a local.tuk-tukfish wrote:Pretty much beside the women from Group 1 who grew up here, I know of only a handful who have survived here for longer than a year, Giblet and Pajama among them. I've only been here 7 months, and have just got my visa extended for another 6, not long in the scheme in the things, but it really does feel like 2 mins as I'm loving it all so much.
I do take your point though, I've met some women like that but also a lot of men as well. I actually find that among backpackers it's the men who complain more about Cambodia than the women, but they're only here short term.
Actually, thinking about it, the people I work with are majority women and they've mostly all been here for at least a year but there's been a lot of people like you say who have only been here 2 weeks and then they do a runner.
Ha! As I'm typing, a rat or a big mouse has just scurried away across the floor. Still couldn't make me not love Cambodia though.
