Never trust anyone who takes money for claiming to know what you're REALLY thinking ...

Dont mean to be rude. Begin it with your Khmer bf, not implying he's a bad person nor Khmers in general.

There are many people I trust in Cambodia including my partner, but as for seemingly professional network contacts, its a minefield out there. Literally.

Or in this case, mindfield.

So you're a nut doctor too? The country desperately needs 'em.

No, I dont touch the clinical stuff. More so brief interventional counselling, information and referral and health promotion.

Yes Cambodia badly needs mental health services in all forms. Its not just for the traumatised and mentally ill. Stress Less programs, coping strategies and just having someone non clinical to open up to. Mental HEALTH is for everyone. Reducing stigma...thats my passion.

interventional counselling = parachute psychiatrist?

Just wagging. But seriously, there is a lot of serious mental ill health in this country. It is a nationwide post-traumatic stress disorder syndrome that has passed down the generation since the Khmer Rouge regime.

Reducing stigma is not the answer. Believe me, from personal experience I can tell you that saying "I understand why you're crazy and it's okay" does not work! There are very Cambodia-specific issues that you need to learn about before you counsel any Cambodian. I'll be happy to talk to you more about it when you get here,if you like.

I can't stand shrinks. Witchdoctors, the lot of them. Back at uni, the psych majors were the looniest lot on campus. Anyway...

What's up? What's he wanted for?

I dont plan on counselling in cambodia. The stigma I refer to is around people still associating mental HEALTH with mental illness. Mental HEALTH is about everyone, just like physical health.

Anyway my networking wasnt to do with working in Mental Health in Cambodia, i know its extremely specialised and taking hundreds of suicide calls in Australia does not automatically qualify me to work with something as specialised as post traumatic stress disorder.

But yes, I am very interested in simply finding out, and mostly for general interest, as to what services exist in Cambodia.

Can't the Khmers just toughen up? If I had a dollar for every minute I was under stress I'd be a millionnaire, FCS.
