Try to buy tupperware in this country. It seems they disassemble the boxed sets, and sell each piece on its own at an inflated rate. $15 dollars for a plastic bowl with lid.
While $15 won't break the bank, it's just uncool.
Of course, I met my tupperware needs through smart shopping - by buying food products with durable containters, which may be reused.

That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart.
I feel obliged to chip in here. I was shopping for bedsheets recently. Naturally I walked into that newish place on 214 that sells electrical doodads and other items for new homes. I asked for sheets. Yes, please follow me. In the back room I looked at a package of sheets/pillow cases that was priced at US$320. That is not a typo. I suppose this would be a reasonable price if said product was of the 100% organic cotton Italian variety. (can't remember that high-end brand name) But no, these sheets were cheapish 80-20 blends with a stupid American label. Hallmark I think? I just laughed and walked out. Only in Cambodia.

I now recall another ripoff. A while back I wanted to get a few towels: the hand towels I was using were fine when I first landed here, but they just didn't cut it anymore. So I headed over to the store above lucky supermarket. Damn, they wanted $30 for one bathroom towel. I went to work that night and complained to the students. One of the chicks said she could get me 2 beach towels at the market for $10. The next day she came in with the two towels and a big ass grin. She said that she had drove a hard bargain and gave me $5 in change.

Every time some idiot says out loud, 'WOW, back home that would cost me x'
Every time some restaurant/ bar owner skims profits, pays his staff shit, but blames the customers for non -tipping
Every time some idiot tips a moto more than the fare or blindly accepts the first price quoted....
If you want NY/London/Paris/Milan/Moscow prices, please... stay there!

I came, I argued, I'm out
Markups pretty well the same as australia.
Mounment would pay heaps of rent, otherwise costs low compared to the west.
However they do have a better selection of books than anyone else so they are providing a unique service.
Who would be a bricks and mortar retailer nowadays?
People try on shoes and clothes in stores and then order the correct size online-hence some shops charge for this.
Bayon has huge, fluffy towels for $5.
Much better than the market.

Go ahead. Try ordering it from Amazon. See if you can get them to ship it here for you.OnCore wrote:Roll up, roll up if you can beat this one:

Not only that. Amazon is an online discounter. Walk into a proper toy shop in the west, expect some explanations from the salespeople and you're looking at an even higher markup. Comparing apples and oranges.
And there's always the free will, of course.
What's ridiculous is the comparison, that's all.

The Nerf Vortex Nitron is priced at around $72 in a UK Toys 'r' Us, or $52 in a Tesco just for comparison.SunSan wrote:Not only that. Amazon is an online discounter. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Hang on...
Amazon sells the same item at $199.99, so this should be the "Best Cambodian Discount" thread.
Look here > Nerf Vortex Nitron at Amazon
Amazon ............. $199.95
Monument Toys ....$121.00
Saving at Monument Toys = $78.95
(Edit: plus postage!)
