Agreed, for some the concept of supply and demand is just too challenging.

I think most of us are aware of what it takes to conduct business here. We're not criticizing retail shops owners and entrepreneurs, we're criticizing the reason they have such a high markup, i.e. taxes, customs, corruption, etc... There are definitely unnecessary speed bumps that prevent Cambodia from developing a modern, competitive market.
I quoted Aruna's price, yet I find it great that there is a GPS shop in Phnom Penh - that's why I went shopping there.
I also noticed that Khmers never do any research before buying high-end stuff, be it cars, motorcycles, electronic devices and so on. Perhaps if they knew what that stuff costs abroad, they would not be so keen on throwing their dollars around without hesitation.

Exactly.we're criticizing the reason they have such a high markup, i.e. taxes, customs, corruption, etc...
Someone always tries to claim it's night when the sun is clearly blazing, but the simple fact is that prices for many items are multiples of what they can be obtained for in developed markets.
The reason doesn't really matter, the thread is called the "Cambodia markup" thread, not the "profiteering retailer", or "corrupt customs" thread.
Sure, many things things are much cheaper. So start a "cheap Cambodia" thread.

One of the lesser reasons for some ridiculous markups is the cost of (preparing to) travel:
Passport: $150/3 years
Add transport costs
Border passage 'tax' on the Khmer side
Accommodation etc.
It's a lot of money for some people, so if they want something, many people are forced to buy it here.

Not a ridiculous markup but a retailing story. A new supplier came to Cavern and dropped off their pricelist. It is approximatley 25 cents cheaper on most things than our current supplier and would save me $60 a month if I change. When going through the bills for the last week for 104 I found an invoice from this new supplier and noted that their prices were 25 cents more expensive than on their price list. Had my manager call and ask why and the reason given was that prices go up and down every day, a bull shit excuse. The new supplier is right next door to the old supplier and probably buy the same stuff from the same supplier and have been told if they can match the prices we won't change.

Is it me or does none of this make any sense, and I'm not talking about the grammar!I read it twice and still don't understand.dv8inpp wrote:Not a ridiculous markup but a retailing story. k440, something to do when you're pissed.
A sales rep walks into the Cavern and shows a pricelist showing about 25 cent discount on most items, so DV8 switches supplier. When DV8 checks the invoices the discount is not being applied, he is paying exactly the same as he was to the other company. The two companies he is purchasing from are next door to each other and probably buy from the same wholesaler? Then I get lost. I think he is telling the new supply company with the fake discount, that unless they apply the discount he will remain with his original supply company.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Just like that, plus when asked why they didn't give the promised discount the company said 'prices change'. He's assuming they were gambling on DV8 not being bothered to change supplier again when the price would be the same.
Personally I'd name and shame the company and make sure all bars knew of their wanky wheeze.
I came, I argued, I'm out
So DV8 was 25 cents out of pocket, because he did not get a fixed price quotation.

Looking at it from the outside..
if a wholesaler wants someones business...they will undercut the previous supplier
they are "buying" market share....if they can give as good a service to the business
as the previous supplier...they get the business...
ramp that up and they have a viable business...
as long as they have worked out their sums correctly.....

Maybe it is the old staff who set up copying the same product range and trying to sell at cost to the existing client base but not understanding that the small profit was what covered expenses and salaries.
Except now there are two identical businesses competing on cost so have to either reduce quality, flexible service or cut costs with less stock investment, dodgy supplies, counterfeits etc.
Assuming the original business wasn't an overpriced monopoly or taking the piss majorly.
If you find business suppliers who are reliable with good service and any flexibility it is better than fly by night barrow boys.

Not sure, but I don't think Monument's markup has much to do with that. Part of it, probably, but Monument in particular has always taken full advantage of having a monopoly on certain items, and certain sorts of items.we're criticizing the reason they have such a high markup, i.e. taxes, customs, corruption, etc...
