This is a free speech zone where you can discuss and debate everything Cambodia related whether you're a dyed in the wool leftist, a liberal or somewhere to right of Attila the Hun. This is also where you get to read the news the local media suppresses.

I was hoping we'd get a more serious discussion here, about why there are cars driving around with no license plates, who drives them, whether having no license plates emboldens a driver to drive more recklessly since he can't be traced, and is it okay for anyone to drive with no license plates? What if a barang tried it? Do the police not dare stop a driver with no license plates on the assumption that he is a bigwig? Maybe that's the solution for barangs who feel that they are stopped unjustly by the cops all the time. Let's all do it! Um, except me, I don't have a driver's license

Or is driving without license plates the ultimate status symbol? You don't just have a Lexus 570, you have one with no plates! You are so powerful that you can do whatever you want. What a way to demonstrate one's importance!

Oh right. You should have probably made that clear in the OP, then.

What, it wasn't obvious he wanted a serious discussion? I thought it was pretty clear!

I don't think that there is an established database of plates yet, at least not a search-friendly one. Perhaps after the bongthoms have splashed out all their honestly earned dosh, there's not enough left for the plate? Happens more often than you think.

People who steal from banks get jail. Banks who steal from people get bonuses. You gotta love capitalism!

After buying your new car you need to take the paper work to the motor vehicle department and apply for plates. You pay the $ at this time. They will give you a receipt. After 30 days you will go back to the department and present the receipt to recieve your plates.

Because people are cunts. redcup wrote:who drives them
Cunts. redcup wrote: whether having no license plates emboldens a driver to drive more recklessly since he can't be traced
It's so easy to get fake plates that I don't think it makes a huge difference. redcup wrote:is it okay for anyone to drive with no license plates?
It's OK if you're a cunt. redcup wrote:Do the police not dare stop a driver with no license plates on the assumption that he is a bigwig?
Policemen are the cunts-in-chief in the country, so they'll tolerate other cunts. Then again, I don't have a plate on my bike. But that's because I'm waiting for the registration to come through, I swear!

Once you've registered, you're liable for import tax. Who's in a hurry to pay their tax?
Ain't nobody got time for that!

Happened to me once while crossing MTT. White guy in SUV slowed down for me... cars behind him went nuts with the horns and the motorbikes swerved around him. Still, nice feeling.
however probably more dangerous to exercise that sort of driving behavior than just going for it.. it seems that drivers here synchronize their vehicular actions while in motion, which in my view keeps constipated rushhour traffic flowing at levels that would be incomprehensible in any western city, (except for most parts of Paris of course)

Your line of reasoning requires long term vision. I therefore doubt it applies.

Nah, not as dangerous as my description may have made it sound. Traffic was slow enough and it wasn't rush hour.

Problem with acid is that it lasts too long.
