parking attendants with tunnel vision
I collided with a parking attendant this morning on the ride to work. He was backing out a Tico and not looking at what was coming, he just kept walking backwards. I was going at a fair trot on my mountain bike, and my right knee got him right in the kidneys. I literally jousted him up in the air, momentarily. I didn't fall off so i didn't stop. It would have been an argument that I'd be certain to lose, as his numerous colleagues (outside the Angkor distributor) would no doubt have joined in to place the blame.
The guy got a rude awakening, could've been a lot worse if i was on a moto or in a car. I cycle that road every day, so I will have to see if he wants to tango again tomorrow.

I've been waiting for that to happen to me. They never seen to pay attention to the traffic.the_purple_turtle wrote:I collided with a parking attendant this morning on the ride to work. no surprise there. there're the most the powerful men in the kingdom. Even the big lexus and range rover has to stop and obey their instruction.
And he had the right of way. People getting out of a car are vulnerable.
To run them over is really really bad.
You would not have had right of way in any case..........you know ?
You were speeding, right ? You lose any right of way you might have had
if you are speediing. Speeders can not claim right of way.

Rights of way on Cambodian countryside roads are open to debate, I think... I was way out in the middle of the road, but he just kept walking backwards without looking around him. I'm not talking about a uniformed, trained attendant with a light saber outside Gloria Jeans backing out a lexus. Just a yokel with a fag on and no peripheral vision helping a laan chnang oot, plenty of space for all!Florida wrote:And he had the right of way. People getting out of a car are vulnerable.

I was hardly speeding on a bicycle.
Remeber cyclists are always right!

My observation is that Khmers, or Asians in general to be honest, have terrible peripheral vision ... or are absolutely ignorant.
Sadly bicycles are not so well equipped, and shouting is equally pointless as I'd assume the unprofessional non-light sabre wielding attendant was also plugged into his phone listening to music!
Not quite true, those cars are armed with a horn that act a perfectly decent - "hey buddy, wake the f**k up" signal (tried & tested!), resulting in them tapping the back of the said Tico furiously to the benefit of all as the drivers sure as hell aren't looking for traffic.200riel wrote:no surprise there. there're the most the powerful men in the kingdom. Damn. Poor car. One hell of a pic!
Fuck with me and you'll get AIDS
I'll try that too when i get home.
Yes, PT. I hear what you are saying now.
But push bikes can be speeders too. In PP (not where PT was)
it is 30k for a moto. A bike is "less" than that. Like normal bike speed.
It happened to Barang, I think. He was quite upset and did not realize
that he did not have right of way. Then he left the country. His posts
were good.

I'm actually quite disappointed that the pick up didn't collide with a cyclist.

Your post implies Barang left the country due to having an accident whilst riding a bike.Florida wrote:Yes, PT. I hear what you are saying now.

He left for the future and education of his son.
Also if you knew Barang you would seriously question if he ever rode a bike.
And if he did and he hit anyone even at 20km/hr, given his mass the poor bugger he hit would probably be dead!
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

I couldn't agree more, they rarely look around them before making any move. Those parking guys are a pain in the ass, they never check for a break in the traffic, they just direct the car straight out as soon as it suits them. It doesn't help that the drivers are so useless that they usually have to do a 15 point turn to get their car straightened out.Spigzy wrote:My observation is that Khmers, or Asians in general to be honest, have terrible peripheral vision ... or are absolutely ignorant.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
