'SunSan' ( Henning Wessel) has passed away
Terrible news
I've been keeping in touch with him lately, as he informed me about his health situation.
About a month ago it seemed his health was going to be manageable and was heading in the right direction. Being his neighbor, I obviously told him if he needed anything just give me a ring. He seemed concerned, but optimistic.
About 2 weeks ago he started sounding a little more worried. At least he said he was able to get the diabetic medicine he needed.
For those who said he hasn't responded to their emails/messages, I know he was already starting to have major trouble with his vision, and was even unable to look at a computer screen at times. Seems it would come and go.
I'm no doctor, but this was really starting to sound worrying.
He sent me a message that showed his condition was going downhill (just a message showing confusion). I was super worried at this point and called him, and he sounded fine (hopeful, at least). He always sounds very calm, and still showed his witty sense of humor. That kind of put me at ease.
Finally, decided we should meet up, and called him. Unfortunately, he informed me he was leaving later that same day (Sept 7, I think) to head to Germany. Missed my chance to see him again. Gave him my email, but never heard anything.
As sad as this whole thing is, and as bad as I feel for his friends and family, I can only smile when I think of him.
As others have mentioned he has gone out of his way to help us out whenever he could. It's hard to find friends like that, especially when living in a foreign country and don't have friends you've known your whole life within 5,000km.
He had a happy life out here, and I'm always glad to meet expats that contribute so much to the community and manage to be successful at what they do out here.
The last thing he told me was that he'd probably be back in a month or so. It will take a while for me to realize we won't be meeting up again.
He will be very missed.

When SunSan suggested to posters they visit Chinatown (Cholon) in Saigon, or take the boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh, or that tourists go cheap on hotels, or that a boat ride costs $18, or SacomBank has ATMs in Chau Doc, you could take this info to the bank. And get change! He didn't copy half-remembered things he'd read one time on a forum as too many do. He lived as he reported.
For that and his generous posts with their understated authority, I will miss him. As someone else said, the K440 forum will be much diminshed.
I would love to know a bit more about one of the few guys I was hoping to meet one day out in the real world. So anyone with links to obits or other information, please post.
Goodbye SunSan.

I remember him on Thorn tree before I came here.PenhMan wrote:When SunSan suggested to posters they visit Chinatown (Cholon) in Saigon, or take the boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh, or that tourists go cheap on hotels, or that a boat ride costs $18, or SacomBank has ATMs in Chau Doc, you could take this info to the bank. Goodbye SunSan.
One of the old guard of misfits who was dependable and not judgmental. Sadly he was a rare breed before, and he definitely won't be replaced as Cambodia becomes more and more... I feel sick to use the words... de vel op ed and... cough... re spec table.

So sorry to hear this. I only met SunSan the once at a forum night in the Garage. He was pretty much the only one who took the time to speak to a "new face" (no offence to anyone else intended!). But that's also pretty much how he came across on the forum.
Knew his stuff and wouldn't take bullshit though ......... a decent straight up guy.
My condolences to his family and friends.

No, no, no.
He is on a very short list of people that I call friends. A man of the sort that genuinely makes you feel good to be around.
On more than one occasion when a group of us were altogether on the piss, he always made sure I had a seat in his car. He knew I can get blind drunk, but no matter his state, he always quietly helped me...all the while preserving my dignity. A rare thing for a man to recognize another man's weaknesses, yet provide help without making one feel...lesser.
I remember that boat trip when he jumped in the Mekong and swam effortlessly on his back. All of us hooping and hollering, peels of laughter erupting all around, the look on his coworkers face was priceless. That was a GOOD day...
Now that you have made the eternal leap, enjoy your swim, my brother...

Dreadful news.
SunSan, it seemed to me, had a large part in the survival of this forum a few years back when (for a while there) hardly anybody else could be arsed to reply to threads (Hanky and Andy excluded). This site won't remotely be the same without him.
He obviously had an interesting life, countless friends, and tremedously enjoyed travel and food of all types. What can anyone add about his personal life? How old was he? What did he do for a living? What brought him to Cambodia? Did he leave a family behind?
I hope you guys who knew him give him a good send-off wake.

What a shock! I'm gutted. I was really hoping this thread was going to be some sick joke. I don't know what to say.
Rest in peace Henning.. auf Wiedersehen.
