'SunSan' ( Henning Wessel) has passed away
Why not honor SunSan by setting up a fund for his wife? I can not think of a better way to honor his name. I would be happy to contribute to such a worthy cause. I would think based upon all the good SunSan did for our members that we should be able to raise at least 3,000 - 4,000. I trust "jm Garage Man" with the money.
If I knew for certain that a person was coming to my house with the intent of doing me good, I would run for my life HDT
Henning came to Amsterdam with one piece of hand luggage. It had a change of clothes in it, some medicine and 5 packets of lotus tea. Around April I had asked him to get me the tea in Vietnam and because it was too late for my mother to bring it back (she had just left Asia) Henning and I spent some time chatting on msn how to get it to Europe - there were quite a few options but no rush. In the end Henning brought it to me personally. Seeing the tea, I felt really touched that he had thought of me but also full of remorse and sadness that he had had that on his mind in his condition. That was Henning .
December 2009 my son and I visited Henning in Phnom Penh. We often drove around the city for hours in his car with him telling us about the sights we saw and what was generally happening in the city. It was on one of these occasions, when passing a temple that he told us of the burial rites. He said that one day he wanted to be burnt and his ashes to be scattered in the Mekong. So we will be doing this in mid to late March.
@ Gasser what is the two Dragon Forum? Do you have a link?
@vladimir what is Lonestar? I have pics of Henning, but I don't know which would be appropriate.
@ all I'd like to thank you all for your kind contributions. While I do know that this thread is for Henning, we, the family, have drawn a lot of comfort from it.

Thanks Cambod.
I will take up the offer of the paypal account. Andy has said Mint leaves PP on 2 October. So, if we can have that confirmed, I'd like your PayPal details in a PM and will send through some money for her.
EDIT 'sister's' post was not showing when I wrote this. My condolences to you and your family.

That's quite touching to here about the tea. My condolences to the family.
It's a site run by Gordon who had a guesthouse called Two Dragons Siem Reap for many years but recently moved back to the States with his two children's education in mind. http://www.talesofasia.com/ Henning used to post on the forum a lot but it had problems with being hacked and losing all it's data a few times. As you'll see it's down at the moment.sister wrote: what is the two Dragon Forum? Do you have a link?
Lonestar is an American run bar in Phnom Penh.what is Lonestar?

Right. I think what we seem to be saying is that Andy/Cambod work together here to co ordinate a small resettlement fund for Mint in honor of Henning, so basically Mint doesn't end up high and dry back in Thailand, skint on top of her bereavement. A few hundred dollars should be sufficient for that.
I suggest we start a new thread to take pledges, have a definite figure as a target (at which point no more donations will be taken) and have at least two independent forum members (Andy/Cambod?) in charge of the cash to ensure total financial probity. My only concern as a site shareholder is is that if this happens via 440 it has to be compeletely above board and transparent.

I'm living in Thailand now (Chiang Mai, not Bangkok, but can arrange to come here if required), and can speak Thai so if I can assist, please let me know.keeping_it_riel wrote:Right. I had not read the posts before me when I wrote, many thinking the same. For me it is easy to send Western Union to someone in Cambodia and is much cheaper than a bank transfer. I pay 12 dollars on anything up to 500 dollars. Someone give me a legal name and I will send you the money via Western Union for SunSan and you can give it to Andy or Cambod. I am waiting.
I think a little differently than KIR I still think a few thousand dollars is appropriate. My guest is that the forum members together use more than that amount in beer each month. He is worth beer money for at least one month.

Willie, a few hundred, a few thousand, it's totally up to everybody else out there. I just want to ensure that if 440 is used as a way of publicizing the fund, the mods/site owners stay at arm's length and that independent 'others' here collect the cash and get it to Mint. That's all.willie wrote:I had not read the posts before me when I wrote, many thinking the same. I would certainly like to contribute to the fund as well.
I don't know if Henning ever mentioned our little message board "Any Port in a Storm." It is one of the several dissident boards that sprang up after the TT debacle a few years ago. Anyway, I had spotted him already on TT and also on TofA and I pretty much went (as I call it) whoring after him because wanted some members from more exotic places. And he came to our board and he stayed until he got sick. During all of those years, he was one of our most faithful members and took his camera everywhere to make reports for us -- weddings, road trips, his work junkets in Indonesia and Vietnam and elsewhere. He was just so incredibly generous with his time. Now that I am seeing how active he was on other boards, I just can't believe that he bothered with us.
I went to Bangkok for a few days a couple of years ago and only mentioned it when I returned to Paris. He nearly got angry with me because I hadn't told him that I would be there. Clearly he would have come to Bangkok just to meet me if I had mentioned my trip.
Anyway, for those of you who would like to see the kind of reports he made, here are a couple of them:
his flood relief report
http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/in ... e=1#122084
a wedding for one of his colleagues
http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/in ... 311&page=1
his local market
http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/in ... ge=1#58923
You can find dozens more on the Cambodia branch, which he kept going almost single-handedly:
http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/in ... d=cambodia
An on top of that, he was obviously a regular contributor to our food boards.
I cannot imagine a more generous person on the internet. I am fully willing to travel to Phnom Penh next year if outsiders are permitted to attend the scattering of his ashes.

Yeah, Lonestar is a bar here, but I;m not sure where Henning used to hang out mostly, I was referring more to the idea than the place. I know he used to go almost everywhere to sample cuisine. In my opinion, the best thing would be to rename the boat he jumped off into the Mekong, I don't know if that is possible, but it would be very apt I think.sister wrote:@vladimir what is Lonestar? If not a rename. perhaps a decently framed photo on the top deck?
Maybe jm could speak to the owner/operator?
ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
jm, If you could pm your real name I would send a Western Union to you for Mint. I really don't know any posters on this forum and presently not in Cambodia.

I am also in Thailand near Rayong, If I can help in any way just give me a yell, there are a few members have my email.

Sorry, haphazard access to the internet for the next couple of days due to just moving.
I'm happy to go with the flow, doing anything asked of me to honour Henning and aid Mint. My wife speaks Thai well and can thus communicate with her; other than that I'm just one of many concerned board members. I can PM details of Mint to anyone who wants to use Western Union to pay her directly, but if you prefer the idea of a collection and request me to coordinate anything, I'm more than willing.

Just thought I'd share that with you.
