Uncertain Future

This is a free speech zone where you can discuss and debate everything Cambodia related whether you're a dyed in the wool leftist, a liberal or somewhere to right of Attila the Hun. This is also where you get to read the news the local media suppresses.

Uncertain Future

Postby Birdy » Thu Oct 18, 2012 2:55 pm

Mrs Birdy says lot of older Khmers seem to think that the King still had considerable control over HE and with the King dead they have no one to protect them. They are scared. They think the country will spiral out of control back to the bad old days of the 70's.
Inaccurate maybe but a lot of Khmer are genuinely worried.
Are you finding the same bad feelings with you Khmer friends/relatives?

My friends love HE, so why would they worry...

As I consider whether or not to leave Thailand for Cambodia, this issue has come up. And that King was fairly remote from direct involvement, so it's really down to his influence on HE.

Here in Thailand, we face the same issue imminently, and HM is VERY involved (at least as much as his state of health allows), and VERY much a restraining factor, both on the military, and on politicians, as well as his status among everyday Thais.

Hope I don't end up stateless, or worse, in the Philippines.

the only general consensus with the old folks around the farm is.....
they wished they had played #99 in the lottery.
when i asked them what 99 had to do with the Kings death they said,
"he was going to be 90 on his next birthday, and two 9's are 99.
Duh!
apart from that... my neighbor said to me that " my cows don't care if the King is dead. The rice... it still grows."
not sure what he meant exactly, but I am going with the fact that Life Goes On.
Why, oh why, didn't I take the Blue pill?

pretty much, and it's also why none of them care 2 whits about politics or voting HE out... until they get the news that their house is to be a plantation and they're fucked. THEN they care.

First they came for the...

I somewhat share her sentiment. She is right about now that the cat is gone the mouse will rule, it has been their plan all along. The overwhelming funeral is also somewhat stage, like they always do, to win the support!

But about Cambodia going back to the 70s, aint gonna happen but I envisage the poor and those with no connection will be more oppress.

With that said, if you are truly concern, the real people you should share with are Khmers themselves not the expats in PP who are living comfortably.

Indeed. It's utter nonsense. The king father spent the last few years in China with no influence over here at all. Just look at how emasculated the present king is. In contrast to Thailand, the death of the king (father) has no political overtones; life carries on as normal.

even without direct power, someone with heavy respect/influence of a populace can be a dangerous thing for a politician. the sort of person who, if you piss them off enough, could really rally the people... you know, like getting a whole fuckwad of them to turn out and stand in the street for a day because you died. former leaders who are still respected and admired by the masses make current leaders uneasy and less willing to openly do something that will set them off. it's less about power, more about psychology.

no that that threat is gone, the current (and less admired/respected) king will pose little threat.

Khmers dont rally.

This is exactly what HE wants these people to think.

Yes we know its utter nonsense but try telling the Khmer he had no influence.

Good thing this country has such dumb people.

If those people's collective IQ was any higher, entry and long-term visas would not be so easy to get.

Foreigners who can't get jobs in their own countries would be on welfare (if available) at home instead of feeling big by looking down on people who are not congenitally dumb but, for various reasons, have not had the same educational opportunities.

Most Khmers get most info/news source from the manipulative free air channels, i.e. CTN, BAYON, MYTV and a few others. The CPP did a really good job brainwashing Khmers, as proved by the recent event. I tell you this, a few bongthoms here did show their faces when it they officially have to, but head to the whore aka KTV house as usual when their obligation were done
