Holy Moly. And is it something that an insurance company would "cover"? Or would they send you somewhere upscale in Cambodia?LTO wrote:Couple years out of date but... ~30k-80k. 65k being high average. Giving birth isn't exactly rocket science and women have been doing it for at least... I dunno 100 years at least. I want some cold, hard figures.

That would be a factor of 100, if I'm not mistaken.shadow wrote:Don't want to scare you but these figures are wrong.BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:Maternal death rates Cambodia: 290/100,000Bosco wrote:Bangkok is a stupid suggestion in the absence of any complications

Stupid is as stupid does, Forrest.
Infant mortality rate in Australia 4.5/1000
Infant mortality rate in Thailand 15.9/1000
Infant mortality rates Cambodia 54.8/1000
Your just out by about a factor of 1000

My sister in law just had her baby here in Ta Khmao, just south of PP.
Normal delivery would have been $150. but her water broke and no labor pains. After waiting they wanted to induce labor with meds another $50.
Final had to do c-section. Mother and baby doing fine. Total cost $600.

Seem cheap or expensive to you?LexusSchmexus wrote:Holy Moly.LTO wrote:Couple years out of date but... ~30k-80k. 65k being high average. Depends on the coverage you bought. Hardly seems worth it to buy insurance that covers normal pregnancy/delivery when the medical costs are so cheap.LexusSchmexus wrote:And is it something that an insurance company would "cover"? Or would they send you somewhere upscale in Cambodia?

Ooooh, just dawned on me that you're quoting the price in Baht, correct? So 2000-3000$ I guess? I suppose that's not too bad (I'm guessing an additional 1-1.5k for hotel, transportation and all that), but I've always found paying directly for medical care to be somewhat weird as I'm not used to it.

Samitivej which seems be the preferred hospital for expats going to Bangkok has a delivery package for natural birth for 45,000 Baht (2 days in hospital) or 55,000 for 3 days. Cash payment (or credit card) required to get the package, they will not accept direct billing with your insurance if you go for the package.
We had our daughter at Samitivej, but did not go for the package. Rented a 2 bed room at Sukhumvit 22 for 27,000 baht per month, you can find much cheaper if you want to go native.

Wow. Thanks for the responses.
Just to be clear, we have no intention of having the baby outside of Cambodia. I really only mentioned it to her when, shortly after we found out she was pregnant, I googled Cambodia pregnancy and got spooked by some opinions on sites. She has a big family tho; many were born right in Takeo, 1 recently, and there seems to have been no problems. She seems really happy and healthy so far so I don't want to jump the gun either.lol. In PP, she'll be there with her mom and sisters(this is huge) and I'll be there with her dad and her brothers(huge for me, if anything goes wrong, lol) In Thailand, it'd prolly feel like we were the strangers in a strange land deal. Thinking comfort right now unless something unhealthy rears its head in the meantime.
I think we're considering Calmette private room. Was looking at Rattanak, as it seems close to Calmette if something happens, but figure that if the pregnancy is normal it should be alright anyway. If not, then we're already at Calmette. She's going to go with her mom and sister to PP next month and look at the hospitals and ask alot of questions. Kompol Pich and Sompop Sorphea, too. Pretty sure that she will be getting a c-section. I never thought much about it but she and her mom are talking like she maybe should.
Can't wait tho and will update. It was so awesome getting the ultrasounds in the email.... weight- 238 grams, leg-10mm, body-42mm, hr-150bpm..hahahaha
