Hi there,
I just rent a house and its current is very low, I would like to upgrade it to 32A and above. Is there anyway? please kindly advise. If you are able to solve my headache, I am happy to pay for your hard work. Just PM me.
Thank you.
Upgrading the house current to 32A and above
You seem to have quite some heavy plans..purextsb wrote:Hi there,

32A for a hot water shower??
If you have a newish type consumer unit, and theres space, put a 32A breaker in and run your cable from that. You don't want to be swapping all your breakers out for 32A units. If you are having the circuit breakers trip through normal use, and not after you tried putting a shower or something on the original wiring then going to a 32A breaker is not the best plan..... what you can do though, if you are on the older fuse wire type of breakers, is to get a 4" nail and use that instead of the fuse wire. I promise it won't burn the fuse out again!

Contact your landlord. He needs to get edc to upgrade your line.
Good luck with upgrading the main.Depending on how many metres of cable is needed they charge like wounded bulls.
You will have to have a 6mm sq incoming cable, minimum from the street. That is depending on the length. That is good for 40 Amps.Probably be larger than the supply cable outside
To small a cable and you will notice that when switching on a large drawer of amps, your lights will dim. This is due to voltage drop,so make sure all your internal wiring is 2.5mm sq for power and 1.5 mm sq for lighting circuits.
Now here in Cambodia, the wiring is,as I have seen, all below standard. To save money and because they do not have a clue

When you say the current is low - exactly what is happening that you do not like...?purextsb wrote:Hi there,

Lots of old, old air conditioners all running at once?
Have you got an big electric stove....?
Are the lights flickering?
Ceiling fans running with a louder sound and slight burning smell?
Or is a particular electrical appliance blowing the fuse/circuit breaker?
Are you welding or something that requires lots of power?
I think there may be a fault of some sort with your supply....or it has been hacked...?
32A @ 220v (7000 watts) is a fierce amount of energy for a rental house to consume....your electric bills will be large....and most likely the landlord will not be happy with a small factory in his house.
As other posters have said - it can be very expensive to upgrade the supply (properly...)

If you have a low current, you have to check before the reason.
Most of the time from the eletricity meter to the house the cable is too small, so it can't get you the amount you need. Think about electricity like water, if you have a big pipe delivering your network, you will have pressure, for electricity, it's the same, you need the right gauge wire to deliver the electricity you need.
To calculate the amperage you need for your house, you need to calculate how many watt you need for your appliances and how many hours in a day you used them. For example, if you need a range of 3KW/day, you will need 3000:220=13,63A.
When you have the amount of ampre you need, you measure the distance between the electricity meter and the general board of your house and you select the proper wire gauge.
Concerning the amperage delivered by EDC, the cambodian people don't really know the difference between amperage and voltage. In fact the only way to be sure to get a proper amperage is to check the circuit breaker EDC installed before your meter. They usually ask more money for more amperage but it's completely stupid as we pay regarding the kilowatt consumption. Personnaly, i changed in all the houses i rented the circuit breaker before the meter by a 32A or a 63A, depending on my needs and of course changed the line respecting the wire gauge from the meter to the general board of my house and i never get any problem and get lower bills. if after you plan to stay a long time in your house, maybe change and replace the existing network respecting the wire gauge can help you increase the safety and save money on the bill.

And if EDC found out they would summarily cut your power off until you paid the fine they imposed. You can do what you like after the meter but not before it. They have to manage the cables to ensure the best distribution between houses and the supply, you start dragging to much out of an undersized wire that might be supplying the shared distribution box and it bursts into flames you'll end up paying for that as well.jmcambodia wrote: Personnaly, i changed in all the houses i rented the circuit breaker before the meter by a 32A or a 63A, depending on my needs and of course changed the line respecting the wire gauge from the meter to the general board of my house and i never get any problem and get lower bills. if after you plan to stay a long time in your house, maybe change and replace the existing network respecting the wire gauge can help you increase the safety and save money on the bill.
