Back to what? We are now the world's newest one-party state. Twenty years to they day from the '93 election which was supposed to herald a new age of democracy. Happy anniversary, RIP.
At some point the puppet-king needs to decide whether he represents his nation or simply a fascist oligarchy. Then again, his father pitched in with the thugs in '75.

Looking at that first photo, the words of Terry Thomas sprang to mind: 'what an absolute shower.'

Sure is, might be more accurate to say that he pitched in with the thugs in 1970, 1979, and again in the early 90s.sounds_never_seen wrote:That's a bit simplistic, isn't it?andyinasia wrote: Then again, his father pitched in with the thugs in '75.

PHNOM PENH, September 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on Monday appointed incumbent Prime Minister Hun Sen as the prime minister for the new five-year-term government after his ruling party won the July 28 election, according to a royal decree.
"The Prime Minister of Cambodia has duties to prepare the members of the Cambodian government in order to ask for the adoption of confidence from the National Assembly," said the royal decree.
In response to the appointment, Prime Minister Hun Sen thanked the king and vowed to put all his efforts to fulfill his duties in order to serve the nation and the people.
The premier said that he would submit the members of the new government to the dean of the parliament on Tuesday in order to ask for the adoption of confidence.
According to the official schedule, Hun Sen will be sworn in for another five-year term on Tuesday.
The appointment came after King Norodom Sihamoni presided over the opening session of the fifth legislature of the National Assembly, which was attended by only the ruling party's elected lawmakers as the opposition's elected legislators boycotted it.

After the ambassador was photographed gurning and making V-signs this morning, here's a statement from the US embassy:

Peace in our time?
http://cambodia.usembassy.gov/092313_pr.html
Ambassador William E. Todd attended the Inaugural Session of the Fifth Legislature of the National Assembly today under the patronage of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni. His attendance is not an endorsement of any election outcome or of any political party.
The United States urges a transparent review of irregularities in the July 28 national elections which would help efforts to assess and address flaws in the electoral process and give the Cambodian people greater confidence in the electoral system.
We believe that a functioning National Assembly requires the participation of both major political parties. We call on the two parties to follow through on their September 16 joint statement denouncing violence, supporting discussion of electoral reforms, and agreeing to resolve national problems through dialogue. All parties should seize this opportunity to improve democratic processes and implement meaningful reforms which strengthen the rule of law and increase respect for human rights. The United States urges the party leaders to work together for an outcome that unites the country and best serves the Cambodian people.
