I recently applied for a job as a security advisor in South Sudan with WV, I was sent an application pack which included a whole section asking me about my religions beliefs...DELETE!Joon wrote:Do WV still require job candidates to be Christian or convert to Christianity?
What would you discuss with a director from a large NGO?
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Q - How much of the funds raised overseas gets to the end user and how much is spent on "administration" and of that what % goes to cover the full expat package of chunky salary, villa, emergency evac insurance, flights to home country annually, schooling for children (adopted or otherwise) etc ad nauseam?
+1 well said.Felgerkarb wrote:I would ask for a job making at least 5k a month. My CV is quite extensive here in Cambodia...but since I am not a member of the club, breaking in is very hard. So, how does one get into these jobs? The advertisements ask for qualified and experienced in Cambodia types...yet everyone they hire I have never heard of.
I guess a latte at FCC and a thesis about the impoverished in under served post colonial neorepublics is considered enough for doin' the 'bodge.

You guys are underselling yourselves at $5k a month.
Back in 2002 ADB consultants were reportedly on $12k a month plus per diem.
I know of several NGO types on $10k plus per month nowadays and I don't go out much!

Yep, I'm definitely interested in the 'cents in the dollar' question too, and I'd like to know how many of those cents in the dollar make it outside of PP.Just Robbed wrote:Q - How much of the funds raised overseas gets to the end user and how much is spent on "administration" and of that what % goes to cover the full expat package of chunky salary, villa, emergency evac insurance, flights to home country annually, schooling for children (adopted or otherwise) etc ad nauseam?
You might ask him what his NGO's position would be if a very well funded Islamic charity based, say, in Lebanon that had raised money all through the Middle East came to lend assistance with the Hurricane Katrina aftermath by building 1000 houses and opening 5 hospitals in Louisiana. And their applications asked prospective American employees to describe their personal relationships with Mo the Prophet.
"it's easy enough to rate candidates lower based on factors such as how they answer the question about the relationship with Jesus,"
Let's someone apply and get a copy of this application form and post it here and elsewhere. Alas, I'm not in a position to do so myself. But 1 lady drink in the sin capital of your choice to anyone who does.

Unless you are a (preferably female) person in their 20s who backpacked around Asia and decided to settle down and be a unpaid do-gooder, in which case you might be able to start at the bottom and work your way up through brown nosing and barang-on-barang favoritism. Older people who came to Cambodia of their own volition 15 years ago are likely viewed with suspicion and probably stamped as s-- t------ or the dreaded p word.
Probably right, 20 years plus of project management in human trafficking, crime, infrastructure refurbishment, capacity building and Khmer language leave me extremely under qualified as I must be one of THOSE people.
I still think its the whole FCC thing.

You certainly do seem to have to enjoy sitting for long periods in cafes. However, I think the frappucinno set have taken over from the latte set here these days.Felgerkarb wrote: I still think its the whole FCC thing.

it's an industry and like any other the skill set is only part of the equation...as PH has alluded to you need to know the language, hang around in the right circles etc...i imagine fcc is the link between the "local" and the other movers and shakers...Bosco wrote:You certainly do seem to have to enjoy sitting for long periods in cafes.
