Last will / Testament in Cambodia
Hi there,
What would happen to the money one has in bank accounts if one would die here.
Is there any way to make an official Last will / Testament that would allow relatives to gather/pick up your stuff & assets?
It's already a pain in the ass back in my own country, I can't even start to imagine how hard things could be here, being a foreigner.
Could you point out to some people who would be able to make such official document?
I will go ask each & every bank/MFI where I have an account to ask them about this topic too.

Why would I care? I'm Khmer
As far as I know the funds stay in the bank until claimed by any rightful legal recipient. If after 10 years nobody has come forwards, the funds are taken by the National Bank of Cambodia - same as any account dormant for 10y+.

I suppose giving proof that one is the rightful legal recipient would take quite some time and a lot of paperwork. That's why I'd rather be proactive and prepare everything in case some accident would happen.Spigzy wrote:As far as I know the funds stay in the bank until claimed by any rightful legal recipient. A few years ago, one of the teachers at NW topped himself shortly after selling his house in the UK. He was living in PP with his BG/slapper GF at the time of his demise. I'm assuming if he had his dosh in a local bank, the embassy would have stepped in regarding the money...???
Twitter: Not my circus, not my monkeys - I sold #K440
Hopefully, family would intervene or failing that and any will or official document, your Embassy definitely would.
Noting, if a local bank or any bank, in funds of an expatriate, it's your [their] money.

You could give all the bank details to a trusted relative. If I was to suddenly die in Cambodia (with my entire life here) my parents would have to come here to sort shit out. With the right arrangement in place, they could technically use bank cards to remove all the money, even if they can't physically take it out of the bank. At least it's a backup.
I know that sensible 'older' people with no relatives leave this kind of access to 1 or more of their most trusted friends in the locality to have access to the money in case of serious injury, illness or death along with relevant instructions on what to do with the money.

Not everyone is born equal, that is the Spartan code
Make a will ! When my brother died without a will, the Canadia Bank were understanding, but since there was no testamant they could not give my father or me access to his account. It is now blocked indefinitely and they keep the money.
What they needed was a legal document stating inheitance or power of attorney, otherwise they keep everything. We wanted his inheritance to go to his Khmer family.
So make a will.

So how does one go about making a will here ?

Going to a lawyer would be a good start i would think. Its not australia where you can do one at the post office.
