The factory girl and the bearing balls: Aesop’s fable #133 of the Khmer Index
-A factory girl fell victim to a neat grift in front of the Pochentong Market in Posenchey District. The grift was executed at about 6:30 pm, 24th July, 2014.
-The factory girl stated that she had been heading home from the place where she worked when she spotted a scarlet red jewelry pouch lying on the ground. Before she snap it up, though, 2 other women beat her to it. The 2 women, however, were willing to compromise with her, saying they would share the find with her, and telling her to meet them up in front of the Pochentong Market. The 2 suspects then sped off on their moto. Because the factory girl had her heart set on the find, she set off after them on a moto taxi. When they met up in front of the market, the factory girl took off her gold ring, another alloyed gold ring, an alloyed gold necklace, and, along with her Nokia flashlight phone, handed them over to the 2 women, who, in turn, handed her the scarlet red jewelry pouch, filled with bicycle bearing balls, and fled the scene. Realizing she had been had, the distressed victim wandered off in a daze before finally collapsing in front of the Posenchey District Hall, where she asked security to call her dad to come down and fetch her home.

Reminds of the child's story with the magic beans- Jack and the bean stork? Perhaps she should put them in a bicycle and when she awakes the next morning it will have been transformed into a Scoopy.
C'mere c'meye
hmm, I wonder how factory girl actually knew the pouch contained valueable's. and did the moto girls have a second pouch of ball-bearings? I think motogirls are onto a new level of scamming. Wonder if motogirls were Filipino.
Either that or she had already pawned her stuff, and she is bullshitting. I could drop my wallet and scam you, its not rocket science.

A female student of mine (22) had the same thing happen to her in Vietnam as the poor girl above. But performed by 3 men this time. There was an old guy already sitting in a cafe at the same table when two guys did the thing. The old guy held her phone as a trusted independent third party

I concur and am sure the newspaper published this story for all the wrong reasons - too gawk and enjoy in a typically perverse and Khmer way the distress of a foolish young woman. However and indirectly, the story might work for the greater good and be justified in an ethical sense if it serves to publicize the scam and educate people who in the future won't get fooled in the same way. This is called the 'Utilitarian Principle'.LTO wrote:Poor girl. That's some honorable shit going on there. Conning a naive country girl out of her starvation wages. Then putting her photograph in the paper for it.

Perhaps, but even if true, it is not just for this girl. The same thing could be (and i would hold should be) accomplished without adding to her pain, by e.g doing an article about this sort of scam, or doing an article about this crime while keeping the victim anonymous.keeping_it_riel wrote:I concur and am sure the newspaper published this story for all the wrong reasons - too gawk and enjoy in a typically perverse and Khmer way the distress of a foolish young woman.
