Expat 'characters'
Henning is a character of good character. Any more like him?
Most of the people mentioned on this thread are considered
"characters" because they were bad. That is my disappointment
with the early expats. They are not much but bad.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Thanks vlad, vladimir wrote:Florida is one of the Daliesque good onesFlorida wrote:Henning is a character of good character. Any more like him?

No, that just makes those people seem like 'characters' to others. Squeaky wheel get the oil. Some guy doing the off the rails thing is a 'character.' A guy building wells or working on birth spacing strategies or doing democracy training in the provinces is not a character to people looking for off-the-rails types. Quiet, work-a-day, normal, family types don't make the 'character' list because they aren't noticed and/or don't seem like 'characters.' That only baddies and bon vivants make the list says nothing about the others who were (are) here.Florida wrote:Henning is a character of good character. Any more like him?

Exactly and love the "Bon vivant" that somehow implies something about french culture....LTO wrote:No, that just makes those people seem like 'characters' to others. Squeaky wheel get the oil. Kuddos to KH bong Phon to keep his picture on his shelves.
Johnny Freezone once threatened to beat the crap out of Dave (Peace Pub) in front of a whole lot of students.
2 days later he came into work with a wonderful shiner, saying he had 'walked into a door'.
Bart the boatman ?Anonymong wrote:Anyone meet the Scottish guy who lived by the river in Kampot? He wrote a book in pidgeon English (grammar and spelling not his strong suit) called 'Shanghaied and Shackled.' Last I heard he was getting backpackers to edit it one chapter at a time. He's a character.
Rated R for Ricecakes
Johnny was the man. Still a fun guy when he used to threaten his employees with a gun if they refused to put out, less so when he tried to stab another Frenchman to death in Sihanoukville.springrain wrote:There is so much nonsense about 'Old Cambodia'. I once danced with Mister D. Declan some people refer to him as. Nice guy unless triggered, which he was by certain words or topics. So many 'characters' of the last 15 years or so. But some not mentioned - what about 'Richard', very intelligent man, but held back by lack of a 'degree'? Cass? Nice guy, but with a bad habit of driving at breakneck speed (which he did). And he paid the ultimate price.
Johnny of 'Chez Johnny's' fame was probably the greatest character I've met here. What a character! Like him or otherwise, he always knew my drink. He was, as they say, larger than life.
Good times.

The lapsed Mormon guy who started Freebird. Had a habit of passing out in other peoples bars. Last I heard he was living rough.

He never lived rough, and unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago.wolfcreek wrote:The lapsed Mormon guy who started Freebird. Had a habit of passing out in other peoples bars. Last I heard he was living rough.

I was a regular in Paul Guymon's bar before he was a regular in mine. He was a wonderfully lapsed Mormon..who was a truly unique character. Saturday late mornings with Paul at the Walkabout are great memories.
In no particular order:
Fuck off Paul of Checkers and later Tiger's Feet.
Hurley
Snow
Mitko
Tatoo Mark
Davy from the Peace Pub and later the spectacular in a strange and unsettling way...Broken Bricks.
Book store Jerry
Declan, who was eating Xmas dinner at Rory's and playing with his new gun the afternoon before he shot the guy's ear off (I decided it would be a really good idea to eat and run.)
Dangerous Dave...who is still kicking around.
