To confirm my guess that Tobias Ellwood is a Tory I googled him, and my useless piece of trivia is that his brother who was Director of Studies at Ho Chi Minh international school was killed in the Bali bombings.

Good question. Any help in this area much appreciated. I haven't found anything useful on this. Pm me as I know it is a very secretive subject.Clutchen Menuts wrote:Why people visit this part of the world with no health insurance beggars belief.
How some expats who live here seem to have no insurance is just plain stupid and irresponsible.
Calamette seem to have done the humane thing and taken in this person seemingly without any means to pay. So who will pay Calamette?
As a bit of lightheartedness:
Maybe the embassy staff will give up their 'danger' money. I suspect it's enough to fly the whole of K440 to the Dominican Republic and back for our annual party.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I have never gotten to this point in this sort of story before - a foreigner in the hospital, with a massive hospital bill, and unable to pay. I mean, I've seen it, but somebody - always some relative or group of friends - cough up the money. But if there is no money I don't know what happens at that point. With Khmers, I have heard that they just refuse to let them leave until it is paid - so they are forced to borrow from friends and family. Really not sure what happens with a barang, if there is any precedent for the embassy bailing him out or what. I do have the feeling that they will first try whoever is standing closest, ie SCC. Be really interesting to hear how this plays out, what the procedure is.

I just got back from visiting a relative at Calmette. If the patient has a responsible person standing in, then the bills come as the hospital is providing treatment and the patient's guardian/family are required to pay immediately.
So Nick's case must be particular for them to provide care and not knowing at all who is going to foot the bills.

The hospital is providing treatment without money?
I for one think this is highly unlikely from what people have posted.
More likely to me would be someone is paying but we are just not aware of who (or insurance) or maybe an unknown benefactor is underwriting the hospital bills, until such time as others can get money in place.

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
Very very unlikely, and he doesn't have insurance. The hospital is doing the right thing giving him treatment and now that he is recovering there is no question of pulling the plug, but let's be clear: someone, somewhere, will be up for the bill at some stage.EdinWigan wrote:

Yeah, I totally agree but I would not be surprised if there was a guarantor involved somewhere.
