To the best of my knowledge, no. And unlikely to happen I suspect. This thread is read regularly by several people who know him - hence my desire to keep it free of side spats and bickering - but I'm not sensing much desire to do much for him.LTO wrote:Has anybody in his home town taken up a collection yet to pay him out of Cambodia? OK, well then, here. I seem to recall CD early on trying to crowd fund these guys' escape from Cambodia. Judging from this thread he seems to have many sympathizers here, perhaps more than at home. When my maid was mugged in Phnom Penh a couple of years ago I took it to internet and, without even asking, people pledged hundreds to her in just a matter of hours. Perhaps if his sympathizers pooled their funds they could make a dent in this problem. And what about that 'fund-me' site?

Around 30 years ago.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
You mean around about 1978/9?Lucky Lucan wrote:Around 30 years ago.

I think the issue with heroin addiction in London, and elsewhere kicked off around the late 1950'sLucky Lucan wrote:Around 30 years ago.
Edit
"The Story of Drugs and Popular Music, says, there have always been "tipping points for drugs down the decades": in the 1950s, when there were only a reported 317 addicts to "manufactured" drugs in Britain, the idea of the alcoholic was born; a decade on, the counterculture's cherished LSD was perceived as such a threat that, in 1966, two national newspapers urged the government to outlaw it.
By 1979, cannabis use had peaked; the "heroin epidemic" hit Britain's cities in the 1980s and the Trainspotting generation was born;"

Sure, but it was at a pretty low level until the early 80s. It might have been connected with the revolution in Iran, where many supposedly converted their assets into powder and emigrated, or the subsequent events after the USSR's intervention in Afghanistan. Either way there is a whole lot of this stuff floating around in Europe. Central London, especially around Soho was thronged with junkies last time I lived there. Many junkies from all over the UK and Europe gravitated towards London.Mèo Đen wrote:I think the issue with heroin addiction in London, and elsewhere kicked off around the late 1950'sLucky Lucan wrote:Around 30 years ago.

No post of your's was touched, although it feels like it's only a matter of time. Back on topic please, although it's starting to feel like the subject has run its course and is going round in circles.Benjamin wrote:Posts deleted huh? They are more likely to chip in to keep him away than to bring him home.A jar on the bar where singlet jr drinks, his family pooling funds, his mates asking for a few bucks from people at work, that kind of thing? A 'Bring Nick home' campaign?
Okay, cheers Scob. As you say, not sure there's much more to be discussed to the case in hand but was infuriated by the ignorance and malice of some - maybe a wider discussion is to be had on altruism but that should be in a new / other thread. Hope everyone had a good new year btw.scobienz wrote:No post of your's was touched, although it feels like it's only a matter of time. Agreed it was first recognised as a problem in the late '50's but not serious until the'80's I posted before id finished - see editLucky Lucan wrote:Sure, but it was at a pretty low level until the early 80s. What makes you think it's ignorance? I've lost count of the number of friends I've had who have died because of heavy drugs - therefore I believe I have quite a bit more experience of the topic than many. As for altruism, that's something that I reserve for the more deserving. Maybe you should read what was posted already before jumping to conclusions by taking comments out of context? So far you have come across as more than a bit judgmental and extremely naive.Benjamin wrote: As you say, not sure there's much more to be discussed to the case in hand but was infuriated by the ignorance and malice of some - maybe a wider discussion is to be had on altruism but that should be in a new / other thread.

I replied to you basically complimenting your first post and pointing out that while I have met some decent folks out of K440 there are others that thrive on petty bickering, putting others down, mocking people in distress, and that they had too much influence on the tone that comes from K440. SCC apparently replied offering to buy me a pint (I never saw the post) ... both were deleted for whatever partisan reason.Benjamin wrote:Posts deleted huh? Taxi, we'd rather walk. Huddle a doorway with the rain dogs The Rum pours strong and thin. Beat out the dustman with the Rain Dogs; Oh, how we danced and you Whispered to me ... You'll never be going back home
