I also notice in the Daily article, in accordance with the Daily's long running practice never to mention 'pedophilia' or 'pedophiles' in connection to Khmer child sex abusers but to always mention it in relation to foreigners, the Daily did in fact manage to work that word into this screwed up article about sniper. Still no Khmer pedophiles in Cambodia according to the Daily.

Why would the CD print a front page story knowing that K440 had pulled up some doubt of whether it was the right guy?
It's perplexing.
Non of the other EL dailies picked up on it. Do the CD always get the APLE scoops?

Excellent question. I find it odd that the first paragraph of the article says an immigration official said that a want "allegedly wanted" for sex crimes was arrested.Mr Lovejuice wrote:Why would the CD print a front page story knowing that K440 had pulled up some doubt of whether it was the right guy?
Is allegedly the official's word, or theirs?
I'm guessing, and this is a guess, that the immigration official told them they arrested a guy wanted for sex crimes.
They worked up the article. They read the 440 thread. Instead of killing the article because the information about Erdman being a 44 year old sex offender was false, they just threw in the world "allegedly" in the first paragraph.

Doesn't Lexus have contacts there? Just refer them to this article...but we are assuming people will care about the facts. Good luck to him anyway, he might need it.gavinmac wrote:Monday morning Panasastra will probably let him go. The school's name was mentioned in a front page story about one of its teachers being arrested for being a child sex fugitive. He's presumed guilty in the eyes of anyone who has not read this on Khmer440 thread - his students, their parents, his co-workers, their bosses, etc.
If thinks he can just walk into school Monday and say "It was all lies, I'm obviously free, I'm here, where's my next class" and that they'll be Ok with that then he's very naive.
I think what would be appropriate would be for the CD to run a story "American teacher apparent victim of mistaken identity" and put his photo and the other Erdman right up there in a split screen photo shot and then explain he's NOT the guy from Oregon. The Khmer cop told them they arrested a 44 year old Eric Erdman with sex charges from Oregon. He's not 44, his passport shows he was born in 1978. He doesn't match the photo of the mug shot of the guy in the Oregon records. The cop gave the reporter false info and they printed it and this dude's getting fired if it's not corrected Monday morning and maybe even if it is.
I hope "CD longtime" sees this thread and that they do the right thing at the Daily.

Something else, re reading today's CD
Did they just say privacy reasons? Whose, his or theirs? I think his have been violated as much as feasibly possible already, so it must be theirs or is there a third party involved?U.S. Embassy spokesman Jay Raman confirmed that a U.S. citizen was arrested on Thursday, but declined to give further details.
“We are aware of reports of the arrest of an American citizen in Phnom Penh yesterday but due to privacy reasons we can’t provide any additional information,” he said.

It's the stuff of nightmares, mistaken identity like this.

The facts are that his photo was on the front page identified as a suspect child abuser along with the school's name. Embarrassing stuff, affects the schools' reputation, he doesn't give a coherent, convincing explanation of his innocence, I doubt they would stand by him.
I recall an employee at one of our casinos was publicly arrested in the small town where the casino was located for possession of child pornography. We just fired him. Didn't wait to see if he was found guilty, didn't wait for him to post bail and explain himself. We couldn't have him in the casino, freaking out the co-workers and guests, distracting everyone from their jobs/gambling. We just cut him loose and presumably hired someone with far less baggage to do the job.

The CD on the other hand are standing by their story; never mind the front page, it's now in their online edition:gavinmac wrote:The facts are that his photo was on the front page identified as a suspect child abuser along with the school's name. Including this:
LOL, a firearm, green pants, and a mildly politically incorrect "motta". Sharpen your pitchforks!Photographs posted to the page show him humping a lion sculpture at the Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap province and later fondling the stone breasts of an Apsara bas-relief, all while wearing camouflage fatigues. His cover photo includes an image of a large-caliber rifle with a silencer and high-powered scope alongside the words “Don’t Tread on Me,” an American Revolution-era motta adopted by various right-wing groups.
What happened to Editors -- is there no adult supervision at the Daily, or can the kids just write whatever now?

In fairness to the Daily, if someone told one of their reporters that a Westerner had been nicked for diddling, then they contacted the police and the chief confirmed this was true and was quoted in depth explaining the nature of the arrest, then I don't think it's unreasonable to run the story that they did.
Bull. The story clearly implies that the journalist has checked the age of the person who was wanted for sex crimes and the age of the person who was arrested, and concluded that they are the same age. It isn't true. It's also been shown that a simple look at a photo of the man who was wanted and the man who was arrested is all that is needed to know they aren't the same person.NO JOKE DAVE wrote:In fairness to the Daily, if someone told one of their reporters that a Westerner had been nicked for diddling, then they contacted the police and the chief confirmed this was true and was quoted in depth explaining the nature of the arrest, then I don't think it's unreasonable to run the story that they did.
At best, it should be considered absolutely horrific reporting that will have nasty consequences for someone who doesn't seem to have done anything wrong.

I agree it's fucked up now the details have come to light, but I still don't think it's unreasonable to run a story based on direct quotes from the chief of police.

To the defense of sniper_m4, you guys need to get a better hobby and stay off the Internet for longer than 24 hours. Or get laid. Or both.
