Months ago when he posted that he was being followed, I Googled sniper_m4, I saw his real name, found his Facebook page, and saw the statue-humping photos.
I didn't post that stuff here though because I thought it was all irrelevant and would be unfair and violative of his privacy to post, even though everything was public online.

It's a bit too late to ban it. People should be careful about posting photographs of themselves doing stupid shit that is likely to upset local mores.Don-Pierre de Plume wrote:Facebook can be scary shit... it should be banned .

Do we think he'll be deported?
1. Expired visa
2. Passport may or may not be expired (he's inconsistent on that)
3. He has (incorrectly) been identified by police as a pedo, which tends to freak people out
4. Authorities have publicly said they will deport him soon
5. He admittedly has theft convcitions and a warrant for his arrest on a minor charge from Illinois
6. He posted photos on Facebook humping Angkor Wat griffins and shit
7. His continued presence in Cambodia serves as a constant reminder of the police incompetence

My guess, and I could be wrong, is no. They let him go, he seems to have something of a medical excuse, the Cambodians don't care about a DUI in another country, the FB thing is old, it's not really police incompetence but embassy incompetence, and they owe him a little consideration now. I could easily be reading it wrong, but they let him go, and if they were going to toss him on a visa problem, it would not be normal practice to let him go once they have him. And they don't even deport real pedos sometimes.gavinmac wrote:Do we think he'll be deported?

It's only scary because people use it for stupid reasons, like posting their latest meal on it (looking squarely at Playboy).Don-Pierre de Plume wrote:Facebook can be scary shit... it should be banned .
To Gavinmac's point. No of course he won't be deported. He has sorted his visa issues out and that should be an end to it.
The real story here is not Eric and his silly record in Wisconsin or his failure to ask the right questions when he was being arrested, but his treatment at the hands of (presumably) the US authorities who clearly thought he was the Oregan dude which got APLE all excited, and shoddy journalism at the CD.
Many of us know the managing editor at CD. He's a decent guy. I can't believe he is happy with the story put out by that group of holier than thou hipster writers who sit in the next office below his. It destroys the good work they did alerting us to the KT plagiarism. Fair enough it's the weekend. They can redeeem themselves by reporting on the monumental fuck up this is.
Curiously none of the CD guys and friends on Twitter have mentioned this today. Normally they can't wait to comment on a CD story. They are all mute. I hope the strategy is not to stick their heads in the sand and wait till it goes away, which was pretty much what Mohan did.

To me it looks like the embassy screwed up, perhaps getting APLE on him, and almost certainly siccing the cops on him, but they are probably also the ones that got him off the hook when they realized they had the wrong man. There was a big technical screw up in there somewhere that needs to be addressed (internally), and this also suggests quite a bit about the Americans feeding the locals information about their citizens, but I think he was probably treated as well as can be expected with this kind of screw up. Ultimately it's probably a good thing for him that the Americans were still involved post-arrest and that he wasn't just left to the Cambodian authorities.scobienz wrote:The real story here is not Eric and his silly record in Wisconsin or his failure to ask the right questions when he was being arrested, but his treatment at the hands of (presumably) the US authorities who clearly thought he was the Oregan dude which got APLE all excited, and shoddy journalism at the CD.
The Daily on the other hand looks half asleep, delivering some formulaic hatchet job against yet another "alleged" foreign pedo caught in Cambodia. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, the Daily does next.

Going by past form, they won't do anything next, they'll just keep rolling along and pretend it never happened.LTO wrote: The Daily on the other hand looks half asleep, delivering some formulaic hatchet job against yet another "alleged" foreign pedo caught in Cambodia. I note that the Daily also screwed up the reporting on Ceulen. While they did do a couple of okay state-of-the-situation stories on him when other local paper weren't, when it came down to the big breaking story - the final hunt, the arrest and follow-up - the Daily not only missed it completely but also printed an embarrassing piece just before the arrest sourcing quotes from local authorities who knew nothing or just got it wrong. Maybe the Daily is out of the loop, or in the wrong loop.

They do seem a bit sort of "special needs" at times, considering how easy it is to research and check information now. I guess that's all you can expect when your operation is mainly staffed by clueless interns.LTO wrote:Maybe the Daily is out of the loop, or in the wrong loop.

While we are waiting for further (hopefully good) news...
During a recent car trip through Australia, she posted daily on Facebook including photos of their breakfasts, lunches and dinners including some photos of him.
On return he learned about the Facebook posts. Result: Facebook account promptly closed and she was sent packing. None of her friends heard of her again.
I'd say... loss of face(book) big-time.
I know a Khmer lady and a banker (holding a senior position at a well-known bank, who values his privacy). They married not long ago.scobienz wrote:It's only scary because people use it for stupid reasons, like posting their latest meal on it (looking squarely at Playboy).Don-Pierre de Plume wrote:Facebook can be scary shit... it should be banned .

A couple of minor points. Eric's photo does not appear in the Daily. PPP and KT are not published at weekends.

The Truth without the Proof. It's their new logo.
Plus, everyone's a pedo until deemed innocent in the Cambodian Daily's eyes. Glad your up for it though. Anybody with the same name as you (almost) or of dissimilar appearance that may be a pedo?NO JOKE DAVE wrote:In fairness to the Daily, if someone told one of their reporters that a Westerner had been nicked for diddling, then they contacted the police and the chief confirmed this was true and was quoted in depth explaining the nature of the arrest, then I don't think it's unreasonable to run the story that they did.
