That makes sense.scobienz wrote:This is my take too. I suspect the authorities and even the embassy thought he was the other Erdman and got it totally wrong. They likely arrested him on a visa charge suspecting he was the pedo (explaining why the embassy was there) and then realized they got it spectacularly wrong.

I note that the article says Eric Erdman the arrestee, is 44. Same age as the guy who was the subject of sex charges in ORegon.
This supports the notion he was mistaken for the Oregon pedo.
Sniper_m4 is more like 38.
Again, it would be good if Simper_m4 told us if thiss topic came up during his detention. He doesn't have to. I don't know why he keeps avoiding that.
"Yes, they asked if I was from Oregon. If I was 44. If I had been charged with sex crimes. If I was that guy. I said no."
Easy.

I'm inclined to think both the Embassy and the immigration police got this spectacularly wrong. Eric, I'll go over the thread in the next day or two and clean some stuff up, but frankly the really interesting story now is that they did fuck it up.sniper_m4 wrote:Yes I am from Wisconsin. Not Oregon. Perhaps the media got their information crossed. I dont know. A friend sent me the news article and I almost shit my pants.
Just to clarify: what was the visa offence, how out of date was it, and how did you rectify it?
But I was never asked that. I wasnt arrested for sex charges from oregon. I was detained for expired visa. I dunno what to tell you. This has nothing to do with a warrant from us authorities. The US Embassy has already stated to public affairs the story is false.
It was expired for a few months now because my passport expired. Overstay is payed and working on renewal.
I suspect that was coming next. I suspect they thought you were the perp (based an APLE information maybe?) and that the immigration offence was simply to get you in custody. Once they had you in custody they realised you weren't the guy after all. There is simply no way a US Embassy official would be present at the arrest for a minor visa offence - it just doesn't happen that way.sniper_m4 wrote:But I was never asked that. The US Embassy's comments that the story is false seems disingenuous, and it sounds like they are covering their own arses.

And to add on to Scobienz' post, can we assume that a Khmer cop tipped off his reporter friend that they were on the way with the FBI to arrest a big time American 44 year old sex offender named Eric Erdmann who was banned from travel and/or wanted on outstanding charges, and the reporter was there with a photographer for the arrest, and then the cops took Erdman off in one direction towards immigration and the reporter went the other way to write up his story?

What is interesting, if this scenario is correct, is not so much that they got the wrong Eric, but that they corrected their mistake once they discovered it. Though I guess, when dealing with a real judicial system like the American system, and unlike the Cambodian system, they kind of have to deal in something like the truth, especially with something as concrete as mistaken identity. Good thing for him this wasn't just APLE and the Cambodian courts.

Weird that the FBI wouldn't have compared Eric Erdman from Wisconsin's date of birth with Eric Erdman from Portland's date of birth.

Had you applied at the US Embassy in Phnom Penh for a new passport when the old one expired, Eric? If so, that might explain why suddenly APLE were interested in you and why you came under scrutiny. The US embassy see an Eric Erdmann is in Cambodia, check the files and - bingo - they get it totally fucked up, start working with APLE, start having you tailed and eventually arrested, before realising you're the wrong guy.sniper_m4 wrote:It was expired for a few months now because my passport expired. I have to say, you are being amazingly level-headed about this. I would be spitting bile.
I genuinely think the US Embassy has some questions to answer here.
APLE is a dead issue. They stopped sniffing around after everyone in my neighborhood said I wasnt the guy they are looking for and I do not do any odd activity. APLE is pretty corrupt from what i understand. They have to harras foriegners to justify their income from sponsers. I have no oustanding charges. I do however hsve a bench warrant in Illinois for a past conviction. I did a gas and dash and got caught on the highway.

The embassy already told the public affairs office it was false and apolgized to me. Not sure what else they could do. However my wife's family might go after this journalist.

by the way, it's virtually unheard of for an American to be banned from leaving the country. We prefer that pedophiles and other criminals get the fuck out and become someone else's problem. So I suspect that 44 year old Eric Erdman from Oregon is subject to no such order and the local press got that wrong as well.
