I'm probably the only one that will find this amusing, but someone asked for a copy of my passport a few days ago so I gave them a photocopy of the front page. They weren't happy.
In Thailand owners are responsible for telling immigration where you live within 24 hours. Maybe it's the same in Cambodia.
Police wanting ID now?

If you ever need to get a police clearance from Cambodia then you should let them register you with the sangkat. It will make things easier and cheaper.
Or register a vehicle, or just about any public service delivered by the sangkat.Hot_Pink_Urinal_Mint wrote:If you ever need to get a police clearance from Cambodia then you should let them register you with the sangkat. It will make things easier and cheaper.

I think it is relative, and depends on the length of the Pinocchio nose, ie very shirty or minimally shirty.YaTingPom wrote:"Respected" and "Real estate agent" don't often go together.

Ha ha, I'm sure if any Brits turned up at their embassy asking to "register" they'd get told to fuck off. FCO used to have an online registration service for Brits to let the authorities know they were abroad, in case they needed assistance, but it was withdrawn about 4 years ago in a cost-cutting exercise.alanclarke72 wrote:Yes, that's always been the case. Just out of interest, how many expats here register with their respective embassies. Most embassies suggest it as good practice but i never have and wonder if anyone else does.

I didn't bother for years. I'm Irish and although there is an embassy in Bangkok the Hanoi embassy deals with Cambodia. As far as I know it's just an office in a tower. I had to get a couple of passports (renewing mine, getting my son one) so got into correspondence with them. I found them to be very helpful, and they have even invited me to the rare functions they hold here, none of which I have had time to attend so far, but nice gestures.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

My landlord wanted mine. She said she was suppose to inform the police or something, as it's always supposed to have been. Instead, she just informed the local chief.Lucky Lucan wrote:This has been the law for as long as I can remember. Told him a Top Bloke was moving in who's wife + in laws are great .

Out of interest which R.E.A did you use?Chris K wrote:Just signed a new lease with recognised and respected real estate agent in PP. No problem with me giving them a copy of my passport. Many barangs are dying in apartments and hotels apparantly...unidentifiable in some cases. I've got no problem if this is the law...is it? Don't intend to drop dead or do a Michael Hutchence in my apartment so I'll see if I can let it slide for a bit before being forced to add my name and details to a watchlist. Anyone else having the same request?
What they asked for is pretty standard now.. in fact I would worry more if they didn't
OK thx for the answers. The landlord must just have overlooked asking for it from me last year....hence me thinking it was a new requirment.
IPS is the real estate....I think the agent just gave him the copy of my passport anyway.

I just met landlord and he asked photo for police. I have lived here for a year and I gave copy of passport when I signed the contract but now he said they want passport size photos of all people living in the building as well. Is this a new thing?
Not new and the photos, paper work, visa, & passport copies need to be renewed every year.rogerrabbit wrote:I just met landlord and he asked photo for police.
