Police wanting ID now?
Police wanting ID now?
Just signed a new lease with recognised and respected real estate agent in PP. No problem with me giving them a copy of my passport. However, my landlord, upon signing the lease together, wants me to provide him with identification also. When I asked him why....he said it is for the police/governnment. Many barangs are dying in apartments and hotels apparantly...unidentifiable in some cases. I've got no problem if this is the law...is it? Don't intend to drop dead or do a Michael Hutchence in my apartment so I'll see if I can let it slide for a bit before being forced to add my name and details to a watchlist. Anyone else having the same request?
I. Don't know if it's the law, but even UN the province I must giave my passportcopy to the police and governmentguy. No problems with that, intact only a good thing

Why don't you want to give the landlord a copy of your passport? What nefarious acts do you think they might take with it?
As far as watch lists are concerned, you presumably did show your passport to immigration officers when you arrived in the country. The Cambodians know you are there.

Agreed, I do not see the point.
I gave a copy of my passport to my landlord when I started renting last year; I do not see a problem with that.

"Respected" and "Real estate agent" don't often go together.

This has been the law for as long as I can remember. When renting to foreigners, some landlords will avoid doing it so they don't have to pay extra tax. The authorities also like to know who is living where.Chris K wrote:Just signed a new lease with recognised and respected real estate agent in PP. According to this thread, as a foreigner your landlord is responsible for registering your details along with passport and visa copies at the local Sangkat.

Yes, that's always been the case. Nothing particularly sinister there.
Just out of interest, how many expats here register with their respective embassies. Most embassies suggest it as good practice but i never have and wonder if anyone else does.

I did too
And also gave my landlord a copy of my Passport/Visa each time the previous Visa had expired. The landlady took care of all the local paperwork and I'm very happy with that.

Why would I care? I'm Khmer
how do you register with the British Embassy? I completed my details online about being abroad, but that's about it. Have been to a few of their events here.
Back to op, pretty much all my landlords/ladies have required a copy of my passport when renting an apartment.

The form asks for an ID number in edition to passport info, I just leave it blank.raendi wrote:I don't understand this... what you have show/do in addition to show your passport and face?Chris K wrote:No problem with me giving them a copy of my passport.
