I doubt the pity-porn will cease, it makes money, and let's face it, more than a few nGO directors are more than willing to rub some poor kid's nose further into the dirt if it means another trip to Bali or a new car.
The reason it pisses off so many people is simply because it calls into question their motive in getting involved in the first place.

A flamboyant philanthropist claims a Canberra Facebook comment critical of her work defamed her and harmed the operation of her Cambodian charity.
The message was only 27 words long and visible online to a small audience for 38 minutes, but orphanage patron Geraldine Cox is suing Canberra law student Juanita Zankin for the harm she alleges the post caused to her reputation in Australia and abroad.
In defence, Ms Zankin argues she had merely tried to advise potential donors to inform themselves about allegations of degrading children in advertising and international opposition to orphanages.
The case against Ms Zankin - filed in the ACT Magistrates Court - stems from an exchange on Facebook in February.
Canberra law firm, Ben Aulich and Associates, posted an image of proprietor Ben Aulich with Ms Cox and a third person on its Facebook page.
An accompanying caption said: "An excellent time raising funds for Sunrise Cambodia with Geraldine Cox".
In response, Ms Zankin made a comment on the post: "Are you not aware of the harm this woman has caused? A shameful cause to raise funds for. This woman is despised in Cambodia. Do some research."
The lawsuit claims the post was defamatory and meant to cause harm to the operation of Cambodia Sunrise - the charity Ms Cox founded in 1997- in causing the former diplomat to be despised, to prevent Australians from making donations, and inferring that the orphanage operator conducts the charity shamefully.

Well I think she's wrong in saying that, I've seen Cox at a few events over the years and her unorthodox character and appearance might invite a certain amount of derision. However, saying she is despised in Cambodia seems at the least to be gross exaggeration.Marmite wrote:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
As an aside, I heard a rumour today that our old friend Lucy Perry was fired from her CEO role at Sunrise Cambodia. A quick check confirms that. From being omnipresent on their FB and official websites, she has been removed completely - no images, nothing. It reminds me of how Stalin airbrushed Trotsky out of old Soviet photographs.
I just checked Ms Perry's LinkedIn page and she describes herself as former CEO of Sunrise.

It didn't end well for this third-rate con-artist before that....scobienz wrote:I just checked Ms Perry's LinkedIn page and she describes herself as former CEO of Sunrise.

... and I doubt it ever will.
She does a real disservice to real feminists and the cause. I don't think anyone nowadays denies that many things are totally rigged against women, that this is shit, and that things need to change.
However, I think people are smart enough in 2017 to be cynical when a professional activist breezily dimisses criticism of their obnoxious behaviour as just some privileged white dudebros out to get them.
She sure has duped a lot of people into believing her shtick though, although thankfully no-one of note: it's pretty clear she's never been a CEO of anything and her social media following is extremely average, made up mostly of fellow travellers getting small grants and exchanging speaking gigs with fancy-sounding names that mean nothing.

I like how, in true communipulator style, she's subtly hinting that it's the charity's board that was dodgy and not her. Funny too how, by extrapolation, she thinks that depicting poor, vulnerable brown children as child prostitutes doesn't compromise HER integrity.

I guess the angle here is all about how to monetise white guilt and generally feeling aggrieved.
How fitting that Geraldine Cox has decided to respond to legitimate criticism by weaponising defamation law, taking a page straight out of the playbook of Cambodian kleptocrats.
The Australian law student she’s suing will obviously be fine: she was just echoing concerns about orphanage tourism and Sunrise in particular that had been voiced by many respected authorities in the field, and widely reported in the Fairfax press. The lawyers who convinced Cox into embarking on this latest PR debacle will be laughing all the way to the bank of course, but oh won’t someone think of the poor shit-smeared children who are being raped to death etc. etc.

That ripper feeling when your employees finally realised they were being HAD = Closer to LucyPerryGSM now
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.

That ripper feeling when it sadly turns out that the ripper feeling you're deeply invested in is basically just a ripper feeling.
She was reportedly let go almost exactly one year after this post. Bravo.Garry Crabtree wrote:With her attitude, she'll be selling cider in Thailand this time next year.

Do spiky haired feminists and huge orphanage bosses do bar invasions?
Enough with the snide remarks, would love to see anyone in here who helped as many people as this organization has.

How can you compare an individual's assistance to a fully staffed organization's?GMJS-440 wrote:Enough with the snide remarks, would love to see anyone in here who helped as many people as this organization has.
Also, it's not Sunrise that is being slagged off, it's ONE (maybe two) individual who is, for her damaging strategy and tactics.
