I believe that is not correct - several foreigners have been granted Cambodian citizenship. This is not a major matter, however - Perry might be either misinformed or simply over-enthusiastic. Or not very concerned about facts.prahocalypse now wrote:On the ABC radio program http://www.abc.net.au/overnights/stories/s4461075.htmLucy Perry says that Geraldine Cox is the only foreigner who has been granted Cambodian citizenship by royal decree. Is that correct? What about Angelina Jolie? Beat Richner?

The lady has clearly been very successful. She has presented herself very uniquely through not just her appearance but also her communication style.
I wonder is it all just a facade - if so its a successful facade. Pretty distasteful - but successful.
The cult of the superhero NGO leading foreigner does irritate me no end though - the only thing missing is stating that Geraldine farts rainbows....
CCF does the same thing though... Maybe I am missing a trick

I don't see the campaign as much different to some of the larger well known corporate charities in terms of cynical heart string pulling, bedraggled war torn kids in Syria, famine starved kids in Africa etc etc, it's a saturated competitive market like every other industry. This CEO seems to be an effective fundraiser and knows her market which is what she's paid to do, assuming she's not doing it for charity.

There are numerous examples of foreigners being granted citizenship. Sciaroni is a Cambodian citizen.PJC wrote:I believe that is not correct - several foreigners have been granted Cambodian citizenship. A well-connected local suggested to me a few years ago that a titles search of Sunrise properties would yield some very interesting results.
Oh Geraldine. I'd give you a week before you lose all credibility unless you cut the O2 off to your CEO.

GMJS, as you may know, I think his point was with that amount of money, it should have impacted many more.GMJS-440 wrote:Agreed. It's doing what it should do.Stagger Lee wrote:...as millions of $$$ a year for many years directed at the targeted problem should do.GMJS-440 wrote:
I will say that the NGO itself has positively impacted a number of Khmer people I know. I would even say I expect it has saved many lives.
A better gauge for NGOs is the % of money reaching intended beneficiaries (locals in genuine need). Kuntha Bopha Hospital uses less than 10% of donor funds to pay salaries, 90% reaches the sick kids. What is the figure for this NGO?
Also interesting, GMJS, how many NGOs who use a high % of income for salaries do you work with?

Like all NGOs it's accounts are less than transparent. Last year it received over three million in donations and spent $2m million on employees and suppliers. It's impossible to tell from their accounts what they spend their money on.
What is interesting though is there $3m cash in the bank yet they pull this godawful poverty porn ad campaign to raise more from Bruce and Sheila in Wagga fucking Wagga.

Returning to the OP, the problem is that she's right.
Perry tweeted that any form of positivity simply doesn't net donations from Australians., so creating these horrific scenarios is the only way to fund development aid.
Australians, as many others, couldn't give two fucks about anyone in need unless they're shown imagery of poor people afflicted by the very basest, cruellest, most degrading situations. Then they'll dig deep with a sense of pride that one of their own is out there on the front lines putting a stop to all that terrible stuff, and praise those who've 'lifted back the curtain' as teflon faultless heroes, so long as it's tax deductible.
It's seems it's the larger well known corporate charities that exclusively use these methods. Fundraising 101, as Perry tweeted.rl66 wrote:I don't see the campaign as much different to some of the larger well known corporate charities in terms of cynical heart string pulling, bedraggled war torn kids in Syria, famine starved kids in Africa etc etc, it's a saturated competitive market like every other industry. Bottom line, it generates cash. lots of cash.
The resultant brand narrative - and the west's understanding of the lives of those whom these orgs 'work for' - is where the problem lies. Poor, without agency, without dignity..
I met someone from Wagga Wagga in Cambodia, although not called Bruce or Sheila, I'll ask if he has donated. And I'll ask Ozzy Bruce too. pew, pew, pew, pew!
I have not done a full analysis of the NGO, I have however met numerous people that needed help and received it from this very NGO. Kids from streets to homes and getting cared for and educated. And now most are doing well with careers.vladimir wrote:

So I am just relaying my personal experience. Not financial analysis.
I am in general not an NGO supporter for the reasons you have identified.

My North Korean Wikipedia search shows that she is actually the sister of Camilia Batmanghelidgh from the UK charity Kids Company - the well-known Batty Girls.
