New Members, Introduce yourself.
I'm new here. I visited Cambodia once, rented a car and drove around for a few weeks (Phnom Penh, Sihanoukeville, Battambang, Siem Reap). Side story: I got extremely sick and had to go to a clinic for a few days of IV. It cost me around $500.
Anyway, I'm interested in moving to Cambodia in roughly 6-12 months. I work in IT, have enough saved up to live 1-2 years in the kingdom, and am planning to work on open source software and day trade while I'm there. I'm continuing to save up so that I have more money for investments / living in Cambodia.
It could end up just being a one year break from my career. But I'm hoping to find something interesting to do and stay longer. Some ideas I have:
- Open a specialty coffee shop. (Probably not.)
- Find another software developer (local or foreign, someone in Cambodia) who is interested in developing something.
Some plans:
- Learn Khmer, especially reading and writing.
- Make friends.
Thanks for reading.

Out of curiosity, how much do you think is enough to live here for 1-2 years?
Thank you.
I think I need roughly US$25,000 per year to support the kind of lifestyle I want to live, although I plan to live on much less in the first year. I'm trying to save enough to bring 50k.
Fixed:
Car + new tires, initial maintenance: 6000
Clothing + household items: 1500
Total fixed: 7500
Annual:
Computer hardware, mobile phones, etc.: 1000
Travel: 2000
Medicine: 1000
Total: 4000 - 8000
Monthly:
500 - housing + utilities
200 - gas, car maintenance
300 - food, cooking, cleaning
400 - miscellaneous
Total: 16800 - 33600
Total:
28k - 49k
If I leave the country afterwards, I guess I can sell the car for roughly 3-4k.

$50,000 is about $48,500 more than most new expats arrive with when they move over from Thailand.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
I was thinking a Rav4 from the 90s (does that sound realistic?). But I might end up saving up more to buy a better vehicle.the_purple_turtle wrote: What car are you buying for 6k? I'm intrigued.
There's not much point for me to come with such a small amount. I briefly tried teaching ESL many years ago, and the kids hilariously trolled me.gavinmac wrote:$50,000 is about $48,500 more than most new expats arrive with when they move over from Thailand.

I'd like to hear more about how the kids trolled you. That sounds like a fun story.
They were around 7 years old. There were 2 or 3 celebrity mischief makers who would compete with each other for how much attention they could get, by raising their hand and saying or doing something ridiculous in response to game play or a question or standing up and walking around randomly. It wasn't really possible to get the class to do anything, because most of them were constantly giggling. A few of them occasionally laughed uncontrollably. I could see in some of their faces that the class was a source of sheer amusement, and I couldn't really blame them. At some points, there were two wings of the class, each with one or two kids doing something like making a giant mound of crayons or actually taunting me. Sometimes a lady who was a teacher would walk in, and suddenly all of the students would sit quietly and participate in the game / activity at hand. As soon as she left, it was back to mayhem. It was actually funny but extremely tiring.Northern Monkey wrote: I'd like to hear more about how the kids trolled you. That sounds like a fun story.

Savuth. You were more welcome than almost anyone I can remember. Sometimes it gets a little rough here and one has furtively to sneak one's hands down one's trousers to check one's balls are still a-swingin'.Savuth wrote:Hi David,dphan2007 wrote:Hi,
