Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Yeah that song dominated the airwaves for an annoyingly loooong time. Was their entire concert 4 minutes and 3 seconds long? Or maybe they played that one song 15 times back-to-back to fill up an hour show. Famous, yes, I guess, but influential????....hmmm.Lucky Lucan wrote: The most famous and most influential band to play here were these guys:

I felt they influenced the local youth a bit more than Placebo.

Not even close. She was DJing on the club circuit 6 or 7 years ago, but I haven't seen her since. I don't really go to clubs though, but I doubt more than a small handful of Phnom Penh expats and locals would even recognize her face.violet wrote:Radioactive Anne would be classed as an expat. I think among expats, probably Mike Hayes, Al Rockoff and Declan. While somebody like Neeson may have more buzzfeed fame in hand and more would recognize him due to publicity, Hayes and Rockoff's fame, through sheer length and intensity of experience, and contribution to the mythology, is much deeper and weightier. Osborne also pops to mind.
Peaceman, Wild Turkey Man, Declan, Victor and the like were amongst a cast of characters, and it is difficult to choose, so I'l go with Declan because I knew him, and it wasnt just all drugs and insanity. (Not to diminish Peaceman's early works and tragedy.)
Gary Glitter probably deserves a dishonorable mention, though he brought his fame with him too. Mr Rape Camp probably also deserves a small mention, along with Agrippa.
Angelina, while super famous, doesn't strike me as Cambodia famous, and certainly not an expat. She strikes me as somebody just passing through, and rather quickly, who brought her fame with her, and picked up a couple Cambodian souvenirs along the way. Like Peter O'Toole or Jackie O without the souvenirs.
Matt Dillon OTOH did spend some real time here, brought his fame with him, but really got to know the place for what it was and endulged a bit. He was real. I'd put him well over Angelina.
Norbert Kline and Bill Herrod deserve to be more famous.
So who's this No Joke guy who says he's famous? I never heard of him outside of 440. He wants to fight somebody of something like that. I didn't read the thread. He's famous?
So I'll go with Michael Hayes.

I bet a handful of people stumbled upon his Youtube videos via Khmer440 and maybe said "Hey, aren't you that No Joke guy from the internet" or something similar when they unexpectedly come across him on the riverside. I guess if one gets that type recognition and response a few times they could feel famous or popular or whatever...even if that fame is more of the laughingstock type. Definitely a reach for him to label himself as "one of the most famous". Achieving relative fame for being a bit of a self-absorbed wanna-be with nothing of substance to offer anyone isn't much to boast about, in my opinion.LTO wrote: So who's this No Joke guy who says he's famous? I think LTO has pretty much nailed it.
Angeline Jolie must be the most famous Cambodian citizen in the world, but I don't think she spends much time at her residence in Samlot. Helen Jarvis or Geraldine Cox are citizens who aren't that famous but they have actually spent long years here.
As for former residents Sean Flynn was pretty famous, but he didn't end up living here that long.
Past visitors, Charlie Chaplin wins by a long shot. Sure, Haile Selassie, Charles de Gaulle, Nicolae Ceaușescu and Jackie Kennedy came by, but that mostly just politics. Charlie Chaplin is remembered most, whatever about his dubious reputation.
Current long-time residents, Henri Locard or Bill Herod stand out, as does Francois Ponchaud.
Shady characters, the ones that stood out have already been mentioned. Victor Chau, the "Man in Black", the Eastern European ambassador's son, etc. All actually top blokes in real life.
Photographers? Someone mentioned Tim Page, but although he seems to spend a lot of time here - he doesn't live here, and I'm not sure he was here much before the 90s, due to injuries and hanging out with the Rolling Stones etc. The honorable Al Rockoff (moody bastard that he is) did actually live here in the early 70s, and was one of the only people brave enough to go around taking photos of the fall of Phnom Penh. He still lives here. Roland Neveu might be another contender but I have no idea if he lives here or not.
As for journalists, Nate Thayer was mentioned and as much as I admire his work, I think he has been persona non grata for around twenty years and I'm not sure he has been around much since. Michael Hayes has stuck here through thick and thin, he gets my vote even if he's hardly a household name in the greater world.

for what ?
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
I think I'd differentiate between legendary and famous.
For me, people like Roddy (rip), Francois and Declan are what made this place so special 10+ years ago. They are real legends and I'll remember the crazy shit they (sometimes we) got up to for the rest of my life. They were the kind of people and times I'm never likely to experience again.
If you want to talk about fame then sure, Angelina wins, but she has nothing to do with PP expat folklore and she has made no difference to any of our lives.
