OK, so I am officially finished my job in China today. I can leave for Cambodia as soon as I decide where I'm heading. I've changed my mind about 40 times in the last few days. Siem Reap or Phnom Penh? Where should I head? What are your opinions and why? I'm led to believe Siem Reap is much more scammy but the jobs pay more. And Phnom Penh is less scammy but lower paying jobs. Am I even close? I apologise if this is something that has been discussed to death, but lay your suggestions on me, which of the two would you choose if coming to Cambodia for your first time, and looking to find work withing the first 2ish weeks of arriving? and why? Also not just about jobs, but cost of living, things to do, and do the 2 cities have completely different lifestyle vibes or are they pretty much the same in that regard.
I don't believe it really makes that much difference to me, I guess worst case scenario I don't like it and try the other one. I have no intention of staying for any less than 12 months.
I'm basically going to just read your comments and tomorrow I'll buy a ticket to which ever one gets the most votes. Kind of like one of those mystery flights where you don't know where you're going till you arrive at the airport....... ahhhhhh the feeling of being free from contract again. Loving it

I've been here for over 13 years and speak nearly fluent Khmer. Upon returning after a coulple of months away it took me a few months to find a new job in PP. That wasn't due to getting rejected for anything, that's just how long it took me to find a decent job worth applying for. I know of at least one long term poster here who's been looking for work for almost a year, and not due to lack of experience or qualifications.
I'm not saying this to be a dick, but you need to factor in the strong probability that unless you're going to teach English it will take longer than 2 weeks to find a job.

I think the OP's goal is to teach English.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
I'm just looking to teach English. I've been told by a few people now finding a $10/hour job to keep me going while I search for something better is a piece of cake. Is that not correct?
Also this has all been delayed now for at least another week because I've managed to get caught up in this police investigation into my school I was working for and I've been told to stay put until they have no more questions for me
November 13 my visa expires so they can't keep me here any longer than that, so I'm still keen to here recommendations of which city is the best head start for a first timer in KOW.
I'm actually really keen to maybe head to Battambang to look. My friend spent a few months their last year and said it was his favourite place in Cambodia. But he also said I have a very low chance of finding work there. Sihanoukville is a name I see mentioned a lot but it's never really discussed in detail like PP and SR are.

yeah I genuinely will just go to the airport and flip a coin if I am still indecisive when it comes to that time. I'm really not phased where I end up, I'm just excited to go some where new with nicer whether and friendlier people.Joon wrote:Try eeny-meeny-miny-moe...

I hated batt. got a job there and after 5 days told the owner ,my mother was sick and i had to return to take care of her
Having lived in PP,and traveled to many cities in Cambodia if had to work i would chose SR, if not having to work Kep
IF you need work ur really stuck with PP or SR, BUT i have seen a new school in Kampot is hiring look on the kampot fb page

I don't know if Gary can edit his thread starter and add a poll, but I could do it for him if he wishes.Miguelito wrote:You should have started a thread with a poll. I'd vote Siem Reap for you.

Leaving one country as your visa expires amidst a police investigation... yes, you'll like Sihanoukville.GaryH wrote: Also this has all been delayed now for at least another week because I've managed to get caught up in this police investigation into my school I was working for and I've been told to stay put until they have no more questions for me

I will explain what's going on with my visa and the police. But it is not safe for me to do it while I am still in China.Miguelito wrote:Leaving one country as your visa expires amidst a police investigation... yes, you'll like Sihanoukville.GaryH wrote: Also this has all been delayed now for at least another week because I've managed to get caught up in this police investigation into my school I was working for and I've been told to stay put until they have no more questions for me

I liked Battambang whenever I visited. I had a friend that lived and worked up there (TESOL). Her command of Khmer was greater than mine at the end of the same period of time in Cambodia, simply because living in Battambang, there were fewer expats to indulge with English language conversations.
I've only ever spent a long weekend in Siem Reap, so my mental image of the place is characterless touristville. I may be being hard on it though. I like Phnom Penh, and from what I can grasp now (I'm not there, OP), the music scene is better now than when I was there. It depends what you want from a place, and only you know that. Turn up and give it a go. One person's trash is another's treasure ... same applies to Cambodian 'cities'.
While it might be unreasonable to expect to secure a position within two weeks of arrival, it will afford opportunities to sound out a few leads and explore options a little more.
It does sound dodgy that you are leaving amidst a school police investigation... wt? oh, and secret squirrel stuff involved ... double wt.
