^sheesh statistics
means little when you consider the numbers travelling on roads each day... and the numbers of trains moving along tracks each day.
do the freight and passenger trains share the same tracks?

For now, yes. They are looking at refurbishing the second track too. Freight runs 24/7. Passenger services 2/3 days per week.violet wrote:^sheesh statistics

Given how long they've reopened the service and that there is only one train per day (one in each direction), I'm not sure that statistic is so accurate.Stramash wrote:PorkPiePorn wrote:Hoe safe is train travel, and what is the likelihood of a derailment?
Safer than any road. The freight train the other day was the first derailment.
There is far more than one train per day. The freight trains run 24/7 (and have been running a couple of years) The passenger trains run 2-3 days. First derailment, and every other incident has been due to 3rd party stupidity - sleeping on track, parking on track, trying to race the train in a cement truck.
So I'd say it is pretty accurate indeed.

it doesn't really matter if the cause is due to third party stupidity or some in-house process failing when you are the passenger. I certainly am not distinguishing between causes when wondering if it is a safe travel option... I tend to think that in comparison to other countries it is probably a higher risk due to the third party stupidity factor (excuse lack of punctuation stramash... can't be bothered today)

Yes, it is higher risk than rail in other countries (what sort of idiot thinks a train track is a comfy spot for a nap ffs?) But I would still say it's a safer option than Highway 4violet wrote:it doesn't really matter if the cause is due to third party stupidity or some in-house process failing when you are the passenger. 24/7?! How many train is that per day? Up until recently (before the passenger service opened) it was still two trains. One at night, one day. I don't think that's changed. Not sure where you get the idea that there are tons of trains traveling back and forth the single line of tracks...Stramash wrote:There is far more than one train per day. Definitely less stressful than the highway, but if you do 365x2 times number of years it's been open vs a bus, I doubt the odds are much higher. They should be though...
There are at least 4 freight trains per day (usually one fuel and one cargo) but on some days it is more.LexusSchmexus wrote:24/7?! How many train is that per day? You are probably right re odds but it certainly feels far more relaxing than the road; not worrying your driver is Nico Rosberg on ice, no kids on bikes, multiple motos, overtaking psychos, or errant animals (ok a few of the latter with the train)

Be very interesting to see how high they can get the safety side of things when then northern line reopens too.
