Step 1:
Change Article 6, which previously outlawed parties from creating “autonomous zones”, seizing power by force and organising an armed force, to include new vague provisions that prohibit parties from “any conduct influencing the security of the state” or any “incitement leading to the disunity of the nation”.
Step 2:
Initiate Article 38, “any party who violates the constitution, the law on political parties or any other existing laws of the Kingdom of Cambodia” is subject to action by the Interior Ministry.
The ministry’s options include a formal letter setting a time frame for the party to “correct” the mistake, “measures to stop the illegal action”, an order to “temporarily stop the action of a political party for a period of time” or a complaint to the Supreme Court to dissolve the party.
Step 3: Create Article 45 which allows the court to “ban the political activity of the leadership of that political party for five years”. Anyone in such a position convicted of a crime either felony or misdemeanour would have to be removed and replaced within 90 days, according to Article 18 of the draft.

Cambodia is a democracy?

On paper it is.kinard wrote:Cambodia is a democracy?
It will be an even weirder one after the changes. Surely a titular change is required?
And I'm sure RobW thinks that a beneficial king-ship is much better anyway.
Ok, so it's a democracy in the sense it has elections but it is essentially a one party system.

In contrast, Vietnam is 'arguably not be a democracy', but allows change of leadership.

Good news for all you right wing anarchists and dodgy business men to invest in more SMEs.

I don't get the connection. Most serious business people prefer to invest in countries with a functioning rule of law.Abou-Gor wrote:Good news for all you right wing anarchists and dodgy business men to invest in more SMEs.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.
I quite like that.Abou-Gor wrote: right wing anarchists.
Dodgy businessman isn't a bad sobriquet either, as long as it is done with aplomb.

2. Leave for a short holiday - just like our glorious leader (although he looks to have shat it a wee bit early)
3. Wait for HE and his US and Chinese trained and equipped goons to murder anyone who doesn't OBEY him in cold blood.
4. Come back and continue to drink iced lattes whilst trying to decide which BKK1 restaurant you will visit that evening.
If the international investment community are doing it, so can you. Did you miss the CD article from a week or two ago?
Who cares about a little thing called democracy.

Sorry, still not getting it. What does any of the above have to do with this being a beneficial time for western investors to put money into SMEs in Cambodia? Here's a tip: what makes sense in your head doesn't necessarily translate when you write it down.

Democracies are messy for businesses. Big business likes a sure thing. Iron man (for the most part) let's them do whatever they want, often with government assistance.
Democracy is good for the average person. Boss rule (or better corporate rule) is good for business.
As for this beneficial King-ship as the OP supposes, iron man is the de facto king. A real king would threaten his power.

Don't worry, be happy.

So we put the king at the helm? Much as I like him, he has absolutely no experience in governing. Any leader here who isn't tough as nails and downright Machiavellian won't hold out for long.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
What we need is an American king, like what they had in Thailand.Lucky Lucan wrote:So we put the king at the helm? Much as I like him, he has absolutely no experience in governing. Any leader here who isn't tough as nails and downright Machiavellian won't hold out for long.
