You seriously live down there? It's very enigmatic but it would freak me out living there, and I've lived in some shitty places. My first apartment here was in the center-city, and I've never regretted moving out.
As far as I know, those little bamboo shrines are offerings to goblins, little fairies, something like that.
The size of a shrine depends a lot on the size of your house, so those tiny ones might have to do if you live in a tiny apartment.
Most shrines, even Chinese-looking ones have Neak-Ta or representations of "grandfather spirits" in them.
Chicken-heads, glasses of beer, candies are all good offerings to these spirits.
Here's a shrine I had in my house in 2007:
Here's one I had in 2010:
I don't have one in my house now, don't really care to be honest but they are pretty funny-looking things.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Yeah I have a great apartment. It's renovated and owned by a foreigner. But communal areas in these buildings are always neglected. It makes a nice change from Russian Market, though. I moved in a hurry and this will do for now. I'm at the stay/leave Cambodia tipping point, so not thinking long term exactly.Lucky Lucan wrote:You seriously live down there? The Khmer, ya gotta love em!
Help me out here with some further Khmer mooga-booga.
Bread:
Found out about it while explaining an American aphorism containing the word bread to a Khmer.. [Life is like a shit sandwich. The more bread you have the less shit you have to eat.) Turns out that bread in Khmer refers to some kind of large malevolent ghost that may appear to 1 in dreams assuming without asserting that anyone here is ever actually fully awake.
Op
Pronounced something like aahp.
This is apparently some manner of monster that is maybe the size of a small child. it's most frightening characteristic is that you can see its insides when you look at it. it is definitely not benign. I occasionally bully-rag my GF by calling her Ming op (aunt op)
Anyone have more on this stuff?

Thanks GM. I'm sending the wiki to a friend in Louisiana where such stuff is a commonplace.

According to this golden quote black magic spells stop working as soon as you stop believing in them. I don't think the irony was intended. Apparently it's also cheaper to buy Western medicine rather than sacrificing things. Chocking, who could've thought?Nick&Bun wrote:Honest question, not unrelated.. what happens when someone who does not believe in ghosts meets a ghost?

“When my family believed in Christianity, my old Buddha could not use the black magic on us anymore, because Jesus protected us,” she said.
With the money she has saved using Western medicine instead of performing sacrifices, Klan Ly said she had been able to construct a house.

Chhil Dan, 33, said right now she had given up on all religion, did not care about the loss of Jarai beliefs and was happy just to feel free.
“Recently I don’t believe any religion. I’m just waiting to get old, but some of my relatives already believe in the church. It’s only me that does not go to the church,” she said.
