Colorism is an obsession in Asia and Cambodia is no exception. Cambodians even discriminate themselves based on colour. Relative to other asians cambodians are rather mild with their color discrimination. In the middle east, africans are known as ABEED, meaning slave and in India mobs of hindus actually lynch africans and accuse them of being cannibals. japan is the best place in Asia to be african.

I have a friend here who's a black guy from NYC, a very personable chap. I also know a very elegant (female) Nigerian journalist.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I think I know the NYC gent as well, unless there are two. Is he a good dancer or as rubbish as the oddly named Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire?Lucky Lucan wrote:I have a friend here who's a black guy from NYC, a very personable chap. I also know a very elegant (female) Nigerian journalist.
Edit. I think he's of Polynesian extraction so is a poly-yank or something.

A lot of Cambodians I know are much darker (edit: blacker)than the ex President of The USA, and many other famous black ppl. They could tell the OP about the opportunities available him they would love to have.
I've been reading the replies. To be honest, connecting with other black Americans is not the goal. I think someone on here had it right about the situation here in Cambodia. There may not be a solution, well... at least no time soon. I basically have to deal with it until I meet the right people. I was a bit frustrated when I made the OP...otis wrote:I'm curious that you have not been more active in your response on this thread. Have you met any significant number of American blacks here in Cambodia or otherwise in Southeast Asia?

I don't know about the dancing bit, but he isn't anyway Polynesian, he's a very big guy and has been here around 10 years. I forgot to mention I work with a Nigerian guy who's been here about 20 years.RobW wrote:I think I know the NYC gent as well, unless there are two. Pardon me for being the bearer of bad news, but when you are dead, you aren't allowed to post quotes from half-arsed Hollywood film clips. Now, since we've already established that your legacy is and will be one of complete and utter stupidity, I guess we can move on. Unless, of course, you have some other stupid shit to say further proving my point. Oh and yes. I can see what the problem is. Thank you.Pu Li wrote:Chicagogato wrote:Pu Li wrote:Then they all voted for Trump and became Dozy Cunts.Chicagogato wrote:Just like how Americans don't realise not all blacks are from Africa (I never understood why they call blacks "African Americans"), Khmer don't know their geography either. Be a positive influence though, educate those around you if you can, there's not much else you can do.
Because when Italians migrated to America they became Italian Americans. When a Polish family came they became Polish Americans. When African people were trafficked to the Americas they became Negros and eventually, through struggle, became proud of their Blackness. During that struggle it also became apparent that these so called black people should connect themselves to their cultural heritage which had been stripped away from them the moment they crawled out of the ships that brought them to their final destinations. Today many black people in the US identify as African American because there is no such place as Black Land or Negro Land.
When you're dead you won't even know it. Only the people around you will be troubled. It's the same when you're stupid.
Yeah, but even dead, I won't be quoting half-arsed Hollywood film clips or leaving them as my legacy.
See what the problem is?

OP, you have yet to give a single detailed example of being troubled here because of your blackness, no less any interesting story about it. Why?
I was a bit frustrated when I made the OP...
Are you familiar with the Hebonic term "kvetch"? I common use. particularly in Hymietown.

I do't know if you're a troll or not but I'll take a shot.
In reality, what others think of you is none of your business and really shouldn't concern you. Unless someone actually shows you aggression by going so far as putting their hands on you, don't trouble yourself about what people think of you. I'm going to assume you are where you are because you want to be there. If you are unhappy leave. But it shouldn't be because of what you perceive others are thinking about you. Just because you think it doesn't make it real.
I've been around SEA a long time. Live in Cambodia a number of years as well as Thailand. I've had an amazing time. I've worked my ass off and been successful at everything I've tried and made a decent living to this point. This never would have been possible had I worried too much about what other people thought about me.
I'm frequently in Phnom Penh and have big fun every time all the time. The only problems I've experienced, and they have been few mind you, have come from westerners who bring along baggage. I'm talking about bigotry & racist ideologies they've learned since childhood which would have been better left at home. These guys soon find comfort in other like minded westerners and you've got another version of "The good old boys club", as it called in the states. This isn't a commentary on all western white males. Most of my friends here are white. However, they are decent folks. I don't suffer fools and I don't take too much shit from anyone unless it's to my advantage.
You have to make yourself happy. Don't look to others to do it for you.
