The eradication of poverty is a ridiculous idea - everyone want to be rich (esp. if they are not), but you can't be 'rich' if no one is 'poor'. People in Germany and Sweden have become so rich they have to import poor people. The German for "We want to save the world' is actually the same as "We want people to shovel snow and work in McDonalds'. Unfortunately the ungrateful poor people started pinching German bottoms and driving trucks through them, so now Merkel doesn't want to save the world anymore and Germans will have to shovel their own snow. Fickle politicians.Lucky Lucan wrote:Well it seems he was unsuccessful in that endeavor, unless I have been hallucinating all these poor people for the past 8 years. Fuck Bono with his ridiculous "Make Poverty History" scam too.RBD wrote: Zuckerberg wants to eradicate poverty and disease before he reaches 25 (no doubt via a FB app) etc. I just wish Bono (and especially Sting - the famous 'bald-headed Geordie coconut') would stop singing - that's one cause I would donate to.

I haven't looked into it in a while, but as far as I know Bono's campaign raised a huge amount of capital. Then it was used to set up some advocacy groups with highly-paid CEOs and other bollocks and meanwhile after all this time somehow poverty still exists.

I don't think you should be providing sage advice on protection from scams as it appears some sneaky bugger has made off with all of your punctuation.snookieboi wrote:when you are in Aisha you need to be aware that you will no longer in your home country and things are different this is basic simple common-sense stuff that we should really be talking about at this time and of course the Asian people cannot be expected to have the same ways of behaving like Western people do we just have to accept that we have different ways to this and we have to respect that difference and mind how we behave and protect ourselves so that we do not become victims of possible abuse this is basic simple travel precautions if somebody is being ripped off by Asians then that is because they are putting themselves in a van Rebel position and allowing it to happen because unless you allow it to happen it won't generally happen

1. I have $100. I buy an I 'love Myanmar' T-shirt for $2. I have $98 left. In purchasing power terms, I am rich. I have $100. I buy an 'I love Manhattan' T shirt for $98. I have $2 left. In purchasing power terms, I am not rich. The first T-shirt is $2 because someone is paid 0.50c an hour to make it. The second is $98 because someone is paid $200 an hour to make it. In order to be rich with my $100, I need to transact with someone poor;
2. All wealth is relative. I have a friend in Stockholm who laughs when I say he is rich because he drives a big Volvo. "Everyone I know in Sweden drives a Volvo" he says. "I am normal." I also have a friend in Lusaka who rides a rusty bicycle. Even my Swedish friend thinks he is rich compared to my Zambian friend;
3. Similarly, as you well know, in Cambodia you are not 'rich' unless you are richER than your neighbour. That's why you bought a 4th phone when he bought a third. In order for you to feel rich, he had to seem poorer than you;
4. Bono says he wants to 'eradicate poverty'. However he does not want to wash his own socks or dishes in his house in Dalkey, Co Dublin- that is done by his Polish maid. He earns $500,000 an hour. She earns Euro 5 an hour (even though she sings better than him). His 'eradication of poverty' is hypothetical - he wants it only if he does not have to pay his maid $500,000 an hour wash his socks.
And so, in order for some people to be rich other people must be poor and, for most people, eradication of poverty is only a good idea as long as someone still washes their socks for them.

While I think I understand your underlying points, both those shirts would likely be made by someone making $0.50 an hour.RBD wrote: 1. I have $100. I buy an I 'love Myanmar' T-shirt for $2. I don't understand either why you choose to intimidate me rather than see my point of view. Oh, I see, you rather not or tried to make it unacceptable for anyone to have an disagreeable view on Asians here.AE86 wrote:wendy, I'm really struggling to figure out if you're a troll or not. But in case you don't understand, people don't like whiny foreigner travelers who complain about service in a poor country. It's not like your homeland has had a genocide or a superpower bomb the shit out of you recently.
By the way, I am poor too. I do without on many things that I like for quite a long time. I don't moan about it. But I tried to make the environment a pleasant place for others to travel or to live in as well.
Oh, I get it, stop being whiny, so they can exploit our gullibility or vulnerability as much as possible?

For your information, not all foreigners are rich and not all Cambodians are poor.Marmite wrote:
How are they providing shabby and horrible accommodation?
And how are foreigners (who have spent hundreds if not thousands of spare cash to enjoy a holiday in Asia) disadvantaged?
Are you a racist bigot wendy?
Not all foreigners '"enjoy" the "standard" of the service or the harsh traveling experience.
And no, I am definitely not a racist or a bigot.
I think tourists or not well to do(disadvantaged) visitors who may be exploring for a home should at least be provided with an acceptable basic standard of accommodation even if they can't afford the more luxurious accommodation.
While some facilities in the city has noted to have improved recently, there are still places where facilities such as the bathroom facilities in certain hotels that in dire need of much further improvement or refurbishment.
It is a fact that many quite old accommodation is shabby and in need of more professional maintenance.

Regardless, we foreigners came out of our own free will or out of desperation, we expect some mutual respect and decency and a more pleasant traveling experience whenever possible. Of course, there are some some risk involved in traveling to faraway places but it would be good if everyone can do their bit to minimize the unpleasantness of traveling and make traveling a more comfortable, safer and less expensive experience.scobienz wrote:

wendy should understand that no foreigner is forced to cope with anything in Asia. They do so of their own free will.

I think you got it most of it wrong. No doubt, I have lots of bad experiences due to my past unfortunate circumstances.AE86 wrote:I think "wendy" has just fallen into the same cycle a lot of Khmer do.
1. Have a bad experience or two with someone of a different race
2. Get angry
3. Express your anger by declaring all people of said race are the way you think they are.
4. Never change your mind.
But, I never try to blame it on one race only. I have a wide experiences with many different ethnicity or what many people may classified as a totally different race, I read widely and traveled quite widely too.
I do feel upset and feel traumatized when I got treated shabbily in some of my travels which is unfortunate though I make it a learning experience and hope it never get repeated again. I try to get on with my life as best as I can and at the same time try not to be afraid to speak out after being feeling suppressed by various circumstances for so long.

That was quite a nasty thing for you to say. I guess I can't prevent nastiness though I would point it out whenever possible and defend myself whenever possible.Lucky Lucan wrote:I think we have firmly established by this point that Wendy is a bunny boiler. I hope the threads she popped up on repeating the same insane nonsense over a period of months were noticed by the guy she is stalking and he has managed to go underground again.
I just replied to the title of this thread and suddenly I get so many presumptuous nonsense and personal insults.
So I guess your nonsense or whatever you are trying to establish is not insane while my nonsense is somehow insane. I guess it can be interesting as well a waste of time reading others opinions, depending on how one see it or how boring it may be.
