I have a penpal there who is a monolingual Khmer farmer. We chat by FB messenger. She is the cousin of my old Khmer teacher, who originally gave me her name in case I wanted to practice Khmer.
I met up with her IRL for the first time during my two weeks but although pretty in pictures, in IRL there was just no chemistry. It was still a good experience and we are still friends.
I'm sorry, I seriously don't like to rag on you, and I appreciate your honesty and candidness. But, come on man, you bring it upon yourself sometimes.
So you had a Filipina gf for two years, but you were instead studying Khmer and chatting with a girl in Cambodia in Khmer the whole time, who probably liked every one of your posts on FB. You then wanted to visit this girl, "and see the temples," and were wondering why your Filipina gf wasn't impressed? Given the time difference, you were probably chatting with her in the mornings and evenings. So your phone would vibrate, your gf would ask who you're texting at 11 at night, and you'd reply "oh, it's just my penpal." What the hell do you talk about for a year with a girl in a village? I'm not insulting her, but seriously, what is there to talk about?
I'm guessing you met her early on your trip, just in case you kicked things off then you would have two weeks with her. When you didn't find her as attractive without filters, you moved on and starting looking at a dating ap. We all know how that's been.
