"It's not about refusing anything. They went for the free gifts.
It's not like they were already there of their own accord.
Would you have gone to a political rally in the UK if they promised a t shirt and a Big Mac?"
Reeks of barang snottiness. An English worker makes in half an hour what a Khmer worker makes in a day.

Would I have gone to a mornings event if they were paying me the equivalent of my daily wage, filling my car with petrol and giving me a Happy Meal (plus toy). Yeah, maybe. If I was doing nothing else, maybe as much out of intrigue as for personal gain.YaTingPom wrote:It's not about refusing anything. Should they refuse the gifts?
If someone offers me cash, petrol and a tshirt I'd probably take it.
Read a report of CNRP supporters attending as they were worried about turning down the 'invitation'. But hey-ho they got some grub and money for the inconvenience.

Don't answer that I know the answer.
You've been a tad grumpy of late. Did someone eat your Jaffa cakes?
I'm told that not only are the rumours of cash disbursement untrue but those journalists promulgating such a vile calumny are to expect a talking to in their immediate future.
Yes, that's true. People attending rallies run by HE himself are not offered 'presents' but are offered cash, 10k for students etc etc.otis wrote:A Khmer friend tells me that people who attended the HE rally (line number 4) at Wat Phnom on Saturday were given $7 and 6000 reil worth of rice. She says that this was widely known and that a friend of hers who has no interest in politics went for that reason and was in fact paid.
She says that no such payment was offered to attend the Kem Sohka (line 7) rally. If you went there, you went "for your heart".
Is this true?

I thought you have been long enough. Officials get envelopes for attending meetings, firefighters get envelopes for fighting fires and the unwashed masses get rice and blankets for their allegiance. Nothing new here.YaTingPom wrote:Sounds like a Facebook fact.
Dig deeper and it'll probably be a friend of friend of a friend who saw it on Facebook.

MIL was invited to a gathering in KC over the weekend, didn't go. Next day The Party turned up at home and gave her 10k riel, t-shirt and hat. Those that did go only received a krama.

Of course - CNRP is not in government and thus doesn't have access to tax payer's money... They use their donor funding instead for lavish villas and cars, and the occasional 1st class flight for Sam Rainsy

There isn't a single government worker that would attend anything without requiring at least petrol money.
